Post subject:  Trim rams not holding

I have a '96 Sundowner 245. My trim works fine, except for it does not hold the angle while running. If I trim up to a nice and smooth point, and watch the trim gauge rise up, I will be able to look a minute or two later, and it will be back down, and the bow will be riding too low in the water. I trim up again, and the same thing happens. I have run it up and down at the dock, looking for any oil seepage, but none to be found. Is there a solenoid valve somewhere in the system that I need to be looking at?
Thanks, -Gary

From what I understand, the pump itself may have went bad as the internal check valve is leaking pressure backwards.

Of course, sometimes the rams go bad too, but if you see no leakage (look closely), then you have found your answer.

Edit: A few years ago, the rams on my 99 Vista 258 with the VP power started to leak oil and even then it didnt change the trim.

Are you sure the drive is actually moving, just because the gauge moves doesnt mean the drive is moving. The trim gauge and senders are all over the place on Volvos, trim the drive all the way up and let it sit, if it drops down after a day or two you have a leak.

Its also possible the trim switch is loose or wiring has a short and its moving the drive.
