I have a Raymarine RL70C Plus radar/chartplotter on our boat. We were out for the weekend a couple of weeks back and while approaching a new port, I was disappointed at the level of detail (or ability to zoom in) my GPS was capable of. My maps are C-MAP NT+ and this was on Lake Ontario. Some area's the best I could do was set the range to 6nm, the next step of 3nm had no data. Is this a limitation of the chartplotter, the maps, a combination, or something completely different? If I got a newer GPS that accepted a different set of maps, would this give me more detail? Is it just a screen resolution issue? If I upgraded from the 7" screen to a 12" screen with the same maps would the result be better? I was left feeling like I should be able to get a much better view of where my boat was on the map, instead of it showing me only 6nm across 7". Some location show at the 3nm range and some even at the 1.5nm range. What gives? Why are they different? I'd hate to buy a new GPS just to find the same issue. Thanks for any help. |

The RL70C is an older unit, little on the slow side. In its day, it was one of the best units around!!! I would look at the Garmin 4012. The G2 map is far better than c-map. It would open a new world for you, it is NMEA2K, faster, higher res, & better mapping. |
