Marine Coolers

I currently have an Igloo 36 quart Marine cooler that is in need of replacement. I saw that Igloo makes the marine series and the "Ultra" Marine series coolers.
Does any one have the Ultra cooler and if so is it any better than the standard model?

I don't think there is much difference between the two as far as insulation. They are not very good coolers. If you can fit the Coleman 36 qt. Extreme in the same space, get it. The Coleman Extreme is MUCH better than the other two. 2" thick insulation makes all the difference. We have two Extremes and they keep the contents cold much better.

I have owned a standard Igloo marine series 94 Qt. cooler for about 8 years now and it has held up well but I go through about 7 to 8 bags of ice per weekend during the summer so it lacks in the insulation dept. It appears the only difference between the "standard" and the "ultra" marine coolers is the beefed up hinges and the handles. Perhaps Igloos are made with better insulation than when I bought mine but if I ever have to replace it, I will look for something that keeps the ice longer. Other than that, it is a well-built cooler and travels securely on the back of my boat.

Trying to find a Yeti cooler to fit where my 36 qt Igloo goes. Those things are pricy but you could store meat in them and drop them off the roof.

The trick with any cooler is to "pre cool". If you leave it outside in the hot garage during the summer, fill it with ice as you're heading out the door... I don't care if it's rated for 5 days, it's not going to last 8hrs. Pack it with ice/salt the day before. Get it good and frozen. The next day dump it all out and just pack it with ice.

I usually use one of those cheap "soft" coolers from Target that hold a 6 pack. I precool it in the freezer and it has no issue keeping my beer cold all day when it's hot out.

We also have the Extreme that we use camping. We use it in August at the Nascar races, and it keeps ice for days. We put in two frozen gallon jugs and bags of ice in the cooler on a Tuesday, and there will still be ice in the jugs on Monday. Best cooler we have had so far.

Making Rubbermaid coolers for a living, I feel that I can speak to this subject. 298Vista is correct, the difference between the Marine and Ultra Marine is "Marine-grade extended life hinges"(may or may not be stainless), 'Vinyl coated stainless-steel lid strap", and"Reinforced non-slip, comfort grip swing up handles with tie-down feature" (sponge rubber on the handles and a hook to attach your bungee to). I don't think either have an insulated lid......

If you are set on Igloo, those are your choices....

If you want a replacement cooler that fits under your seat like the OEM Igloo that may have come with your boat, those are your choices.....

We make 102 and 150 qts with all stainless hardware and you can get them with refreeze bottles (3 in the lid and two as dividers) that help the prechill process and reduce the amount of ice needed

Some of the bigger coolers come with an insulated lid, Our Rubbermaid 45,50, 60, 75, 102 and 150 qt coolers come with an insulated lid. It helps to keep the drinks cold and ice from melting BUT, Ric hit the nail on the head when he talked about prechilling your cooler, it is a MUST for maximum staying power for your ice no matter what cooler you decide to buy......

No 6 pack "totes" on my boat. This is what is called a Beer Locker.....
