This is a sanded section of my bottom paint - is this VC17? I understand VC17 has specific requirements when repainting. ![]() |

I am guessing that it will be very difficult to figure out what the bottom paint is. You may want to consult with your marine yard for some suggestions on what to do, they may have a bottom paint that can be repainted without having to remove the old stuff. If you put the wrong stuff over it it will not adhere properly and you will be doing it again next year |

VC-17 is a fairly unique bottom paint that is not compatible with a lot of other bottom paints. VC-17 was what we decided to put on our 328. I would call the Intelux techical support line and describe your concern. I have used them a bunch of times over 15 years and found them to be helpful. I don't think Bottom Kote is compatible with VC-17 but that doesn't mean somebody didn't do it. Mike. |

acguy, lets say I'm taking an educated guess. It's hard to tell with a picture, but I'd say there's an epoxy layer under the bottom paint. weather, I've been to free seminars put on by Interlux. Check with them for one close to you and go to it. They are very informative and time well spent, especially if you plan on doing it yourself. If that is your plan, I recommend using frog tape for all of your masking. A good paint job = 90% prep and 10% painting. John ![]() |

I was hoping you were going to give a hard and fast way to tell!! |

I could tell if I saw it,,,a picture just don't cut it. If you have any excess caulking with paint on it, like around your trim tabs, take a bit off. Show it to your local marine supplier and he'll be able to tell you what you have. Hope that helps. John ![]() |

I talked to a guy from the Rigging Shoppe that said you can tell by sanding a bit and seeing the colour underneith. VC17 starts a coppery colour and turns black as it wears. At least that's what I've been told. I'm not doing the painting this year - I've got enough on my hands so I'm letting the marina do it. I'm just trying to do some of my own due diligence just in case the marina painters don't inspect what they are painting over. |

Hard to tell from the pictures, looks kind of like flying debris from Chernobyl ![]() Maybe e-mail Four Winns factory, give them your hull ID number, and from there they can check the build sheet and tell if your boat was bottom painted at the factory, and what was used. Good luck. |
