Are you supposed to fill it with gas before you install it back into system?

Nope. That's the fuel pump's job.

It really depends, if the filter is on the suction side of the pump (the pump has to suck gas out of the filter, instead of pushing gas through the filter). On my carbed engine, the filter is for sure on the suction side, so it is much easier to start it if you filled the filter with gas. I don't know for sure how the FI engines are set up, but I bet that its the same way.

A fuel pump in good working order can fill a separator in seconds.

Just screw it on...remember to moisten the rubber gasket with a smidgen of oil. The pump will fill her up....I just swapped mine.

I have always used them on my boats. Remember to check for water each time before you start out. Also remember to change the filter each service. Cheaper than rebuilding an engine.
Juts like replacing fuel or adding stabiliser when your boat is moth balled for the winter!! All makes good economical sense in the end.

The pump should fill the filter on fuel injection engines but I have seen multiple occasions where it does not. On carb engines it will also just takes longer. To prevent cranking any longer than necessary on any engine I fill them first at least halfway.

I feel like I need a shower -- moisten and screw.... funny stuff. No need to "prime" the fuel filter.

Ha ha good one....
fuel pumps are like raw water impellers, they are designed to suck gas not air. In fact, there has been a rash of fuel pump failures on late model Volvo FI motors and I have read that some people advise filling the water sep filter full of gas, so the fuel pump doesn't run dry which is not good for it.

Let us know when you take off the fuel filter, did it have gas in it or not...

Took the water separator off and it had very little gas inside that makes me think that is why she would fire up and run for a bit then cough cough, screw you I am turning off now. Filled up the water separator with gas, screwed it in and she fired up and ran really rough but didn't turn off, so at the fuel pump and near the intake there are these two shrader valves and I had read somewhere here that you push them in and it should bleed the system of air so I did and wouldn't you believe it a bunch of air came out of both and they spit some gas out also. So we kept a hose and a fire extinguiisher close by and turned on the boat and this weird whining noise was coming from the fuel pump so we pushed in this valve and it bled more air and spit more gas. We did this a couple of times and the noise coming from the fuel pump stopped. We took out the boat yesterday to do a seatrail and she ran like a champ!!! I had changed the spark plugs also which really increased the response in the throttle which was great! Thanks for all the help everyone problem is resolved chalk one up again to all my friends and their great tips at the Ifourwinns forum you guys are all great!

See told ya to fill it, that makes it easier on that $700 fuel pump! Learned a few things being a shade tree mechanic for 40 years....the whining sound is it sucking air, not really good for the pump.....so next time fill it.....
