Trying to figure out if I should go with the original wires or get some really cool Taylor 8MM or other high performance wires? Let me know what you guys think.

"Cool" spark plug wires? You don't need Volvo wires, just get a good quality wire that fits correctly.

I have ACDelco wires on my boat from a Jeep. They were like $8 shipped from Rock Auto. I would like a quality set like Taylor on my boat, but I have yet to find a fitment that fits the 3.0 from a 4 banger automotive application since they're all DOHC.

If you're going to throw money at hi-perf wires, throw it at everything else in your secondary ignition. Otherwise you wont notice a thing, sorry to say.

In terms of boat dollars, VP wires aren't that expensive.

Performance wise you won't see any more horsepowers, but quality 8mm wires will last much longer then 7mm VP wires.

Not really interested in the performance side of the equation since the boat already for me is fast enough by 20+ mph. I would like to not have to deal with them, so the long haul is where I am interested since the volvo penta set it has on right now are 4 years old and one of the wires and boot are really in poor shape. I don't know what the secondary ignition is, also does it have a coil and rotor I haven't really looked since my last smart idea to drain the fuel tank turned into a bloody mess. I am steering toward the really nice looking set from Taylor they really last a long time. I have had a pair of Taylor wires on my high performance mustang for years and they look new.

How old is the boat? My old boat had the OE wires on it and I changed them but honestly when I checked them with the Ohm meter they were fine so I kept them as spares. They were probably on there 15 years...If the terminals are good and the resistance is in specs then they are fine.

But your Mustang does not drive in salt water.

Exactly. That's the reason why to get a GOOD set of wires and iridium plugs. As I said in the past, my next tune up I will order a roll of Taylor 8mm wire, ends, and the tool. Since nobody makes a quality set of wires for the 3.0, I'll make some.

If I were to make bulk (20 sets) I could make/sell Taylor (or MSD) 8mm wire sets for the 3.0 delco (VP or MC) for around $40 shipped. Half the price of Mallory wires.

OH, and plug wires are plug wires. They are all silicone jacketed. Volvo Penta/Mercruiser branded wires are no better in salt conditions then any other brand on the market. Quit with that nonsense. They are not specially made or treated for the "marine" environment.

Speaking of salt. A car's engine bay is exposed on the bottom. If you live in the northern climates where it snows (salt on the road), your car's engine sees more salt exposure then your nice and sealed boat engine will ever see. We won't even mention that if you live next to the ocean where the salt is in the air 24x7.

When you are right for the first time, I will rejoice. Until then, I just keep pulling my hair out.
