Post subject:  Pumping out the holding tank

We're looking at spending the weekend on our boat and I need to pump out the waste tank. I've never done this before, and the manual doesn't give much information. Is it as simple as inserting the hose and sucking it all out?

How does this work? It must be vented somewhere, otherwise you'd create a vacuum in the system and nothing would come out. Is there a seal around the connection or long hose that reaches down into the tank?

I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I do it. I don't want to create a mess to start the holiday weekend. :D

Yes,the waste tank is vented on the starboard side. When you go to a pump-out station they will have a male fitting that either treads in or pushes in your waste tank pump-out fitting. It doesn't need to go down into the tank, it's works on suction. After the tank is empty I ask for a rinse-out. The attendant using a fresh water supply and adds 5 to 10 gallons of fresh water to the tank and then finishes up by doing another pump-out. Make sure you don't drop your waste cap overboard!

Thanks for the info. Our marina has a self-service 24/7 pumpout - no attendant so I'm on my own. I did read about adding water and flushing out again, though.
