Post subject: | Question on water temp sensor location |
Hi All, I finally got my boat out this weekend and tested out my new gauges. Good news !!! They all worked. I only had one strange reading from the water temp sensor. When I first put the boat in the water and was mostly stationary the reading was spot on at 75 degrees, Florida Indian River....gotta love it. Well, when I got up to speed the water temp climbed to 107 degrees. I located the sensor on the transom near the speedo pitot sensor. I don't know the boat hydrodynamics but am suspecting that that area is a stagnant area and draws the exhaust from the prop into that area causing the heat rise. As soon as I slowed the boat the temp began to drop. Has anyone else added a water temp sensor and where do you locate it? My original one was integrated into the paddlewheel speedo sensor so I suspect with the paddle wheel always catching fresh water it was accurate. Any suggestions? Thanks Rob |

I upgraded to a water/air temp sensor integrated into my depth finder after the original depth finder only unit was acting up (back light not working). I located the water temp senser in a similar area to yours, right above the speedo pickup tube. I too have noticed temps increase when the boat is running, but I've never seen a spike what you've described. I typically see an increase of 5-10 degrees when the boat is running. Also with mine, the temp increase exists while engine is running regardless of idling or cruising. I'm not sure of the transom design on your boat, but I don't think I'm going to find a better location on my boat. My integrated swim platform wraps around my outdrive. It's a nuance I've decided to live with. |
