Broke the boat out today to get ready for lake in morning...saw oil dripping from bilge drain...what the hell....check fluids and all good but the power steering fluid. Now I know what just not sure where. There is a metal tube coming from behind the pump and curves around to front where the tube is plugged with a rubber plug and clamp. I grab it and its like a small balloon and dripping in oil....I suspect this is my leak source even though I see no trail of oil to bilge for absolute proof. What is this line for if anyone knows....and...why is it plugged???? I got some high pressure hose and plugged it with a bolt and slipped it over the metal line and clamped the hell out of it with four hose clamps. It was a full tube of steering fluid low. Anyone have this issue before..or...know of other common sources for steering fluid leaks.....I don't think I have a fluid cooler for steering fluid...if I do you can't see it underneath engine or anywhere else. The hoses leading back to drive are oil free. |

The hydraulic steering rams of that vintage are known to have issues with leakage. To be safe, check all of your connections and clamps...you might get lucky and find something loose. |

my ram seals are toast. I just looped the lines coming out of the power steering pump bypassing it all. Been without power steering for almost a year now, I don't mind it being 6'1 200lb... but my GF that's 100lb can't drive the boat the steering wheel takes her for a ride. I'll have to fix it one day. The seals can be fixed by any hydraulic shop. |

Its not a struggle in steering issue...I haven't been 6' 200 lbs since 8th grade....the good news is I just got back from a couple hours of cleaning the boat....no oil in bilge after 5 hours run time....no drop in per steering fluid either and the actuator ends are dry except for the green grease I stuck my digit into. Looking like it was the bullcrap plug they had on the useless line coming out of pump....whats the purpose of this short line with a plug....seems to be plugged on every model....thin rubber cap that spews....I got a real plug there now. |
