My dealer supposedly changed my spark plugs before they delivered my boat NOT!!!, my boat survey went through without a problem so why is it when I try to check the gap on them I find this??? :evil: Turns out not only did they not replace the spark plugs I paid for but there were different spark plug types installed :twisted: Needless to say the BBB has been contacted. When in doubt check it yourself is my new motto, my surveyor came highly recommended so a question pops up, how was he supposed to do compression checks on the cylinders without taking the spark plugs out. I blasted him also! My uncle luckily did the checks while we were changing them and they are all fine but that is after the fact. I can't believe this industry has such crooks in it. I was under the belief that you pay someone to do a job you don't have to hold their hand and stand there while they do it. Totally disgusted to where a person will stake their reputation and name for two hundred dollars.

LOL! No when I purchased the boat a year ago they were supposed to change them.. Four of the spark plugs broke as the pictures show and two were of different brands, 6 of one make and 2 of another. Tried to post the pictures of the replacements but they are too high in resolution. I am sure they did in 2008 8)

Joe, surveyors here in Canada don't do mechanical inspections unless certified for both. Are you sure he charged you for a compression test?

Those plugs have been changed sometime; on both the VP engines I've had the original plugs had black (1999) or red (2004) paint overspray. I can't understand why plugs from 2008 should look so rusty and bad.

Those look BAD! I have had my boat in the water for 6 months at a time in the salt, but the AC Delco Marine plugs never had any rust on them anywhere. That almost looks like there was salt water leak (cooling line to manifolds, manifold/riser gasket) I'd look around each side of the engine to see if you can see any cooling leaks. When I install my plugs I put a bit of OMC/Bombardier Triple Guard grease on the threads, this stuff is good for preventing salt water corrosion. I change the plugs each season even though my hrs are not high enough to justify but just for the reasons that one, the fogging oil fouls them and two, you don't want to leave plugs in a salt water engine too long.
The moral of the story is, if you want something done right....

Looked around no leaks didn't think about adding grease I will do that tomorrow. I thought I was going out today but weather wasn't working with me.

Yes that is what he said. I am just glad everything checks out and is the boat is running fine after we figured out that you are not supposed to run the engine until it runs out of gas Big No No!!!

Hey Joe - in your thread "HORROR STORY Start of Lobster Mini Season in my 2008 H220SS" - how much salt water ended up in the engine compartment? Could that have contibuted to the rusting?

Having different types of plugs in there does sound suspicious....My dealer (no longer in business) and my mechanic always save the old parts for me to check out - maybe a good idea to ask from now on. If nothing else, it gives you a chance to inspect what came out to see what condition they were in.

I always save old parts for the customer, show them what I did and what the old parts looked like. That way no future issues or "you didnt do this" or "you didnt do that" comments. Plus, as a consumer its a good way to make sure you are not getting screwed over.

My repair guys said they replaced all the belts and one broke 10 hours later. They gave me a bag of parts they said they replaced including an old belt. Took broken belt to a few auto places until I found proper replacement. 2 places said belt had to be old because of cracks and cupping ??? I will do it myself in the future as well

Belts are simple, unless you own a 3.0. The dang main v-belt that runs everything goes through the engine mount. You have to jack the engine up and undo the stupid mount.

Tell me about it the different brands,some were Iridium tip and some were regular spark plugs is what was really disturbing! Water did get in there but I drained and sprayed down everything with 303 I think it is called. The only problem I ran into was the starter which went to hades in a handbasket two days after. I didn't notice any rust in there but considering the humidity and heat in South Florida it doesn't take long for rust to form. I will take another look today after I get her home, I am changing the sparkplug wires and the rotor today so I will give her a thorough going over to make sure I didn't miss anything. If I see anything I don't like I heard of some rust remover that you spray on not sure what it's called but I would have to buy the paint to paint over what I strip I guess.

Crikey I just purchased my spark plugs at the auto parts store didn't know there were specific spark plugs for marine applications! Great time to change the spark plugs again to marine standards!!! :shock:
