Get a marine tool kit that is compact and similar to this one. I use mine all the time for minor fix-it jobs and it stores out of the way. The first aid kit is a must have as well.

Here's the deal...it has been a rainy and crappy weekend with the odd break to do some yard work ( i know...boo hoo) anyways I got to thinking what does everyone bring onboard as there necessities.As a long time drag racer I typically over pack tools and parts somewhat resembling a combination between a Snap-on tool truck and a NAPA delivery vehicle. Being an over packer I wondered what I am missing, and if others would find ideas useful for figuring out what items to bring. For now I will skip the basics like sunscreen, clothing, and food, and focus on tools and parts. So here goes...my onboard list includes: -Rachet set -screwdrivers -large/small crescent wrench -metric/imperial wrenches -wire crimpers/wire/connectors -replacement belts -spare spark plugs +2-wires -fuses (reg blade for my boat plus two styles for others) -zip ties -duct tape -piece of 2" hose & various hose clamps (can be used a temporary hose patch for most sizes) -fuel filters -fluids (oil etc.) -spare prop c/w nut/ lock/cotter pin -extra ropes (including stretch anchor rope for towing) -distribitor cap/rotor -portable booster box -paddles -first aid kit -2-boating safety kits +additional fire extinguisher and floating rope -additional flachlights -extension push/grab pole -spare drain plug -glow sticks (great for night time) -backup fuel pump -carb jets/gaskets -volt/ohm meter/tach Well that is all I can remember with out going out to the boat to look for missed items... |

Where you from in alberta? seems like you need to tow a dingy to bring all that stuff haha. better safe then sorry i guess what do you use for your push grab pole? |

That's why I started with a V8, cause I can tow the wife and the tools in the dingy LOL...I use a telescopic 9' aluminum pole with a removable hook. |

ideas where a guy would find something like that? i've been to rona and crappy tire trying to find something like that... I currently just use a 7 foot poll but telescoping would great for storage and more length |

You can find them typically in the paint departments of the Home Depot's Rona's or Totems if you are in Alberta, the biggest difference aside from the price is the locking mechinism, some are simply a twist lock which are prone to fail, the threaded couplers are much better. You can get them up to 21', I find 9' to be sufficient in most cases but if I bough another one I would buy a 12' as it is more versatile. price should range frome 20-50 bucks depending on length and quality. |

There's being prepared for anything, vs paying someone else to save you the stress and time wasted before you end up paying someone else anyway. I keep pretty much most of that stuff on our 348, or at least nearby in our storage locker. But on a 190? Where? I'm really not inclined to start doing repairs out on the water while I have friends & family on board. Better to just call sea tow and then do the work myself back at the dock later. I can do the work, I just would not want to be doing with everyone else there, worrying or "helping". |

I agree with all that has been posted but I believe the most important item in my kit has to be THE MOSQUITO SPRAY!!!!! If you hop around the islands out here in Miami, Bocachita, Elliot Key or any island for that matter you know one thing when that sun starts coming down or even in the shade on bocachita you are going to get eaten by those bastards! Keep a bottle in your kit and you will remember me if you ever need it. |

If you feel it is neccesary to carry the tools/spares to: replace fuel filters, fuel pump, rebuild the carb, cap/rotor and spark plugs for a 19' boat with a V8, then you have some serious reliability concerns! |

On the contrary, all the work I do on the boat I use the tools on the boat(if something is missing it is added).As for the weight it is less than an extra battery(all fits in the floor cubby with the water skis, fishing gear,knee board etc.)...the only tools I bring are the ones I may need, not duplicates of ones I don't. Further I have a reputation of not breaking down, but many are estatic when I arrive because I can assist in fixing the problem, not enduring the wear/tear/boredom involved with towing other boats to shore. I still cary a cell phone/credit card and usually some women who know how to flash a ride if I forgot the credit card. I am a long time dry land engine builder/racer who would prefer to rescue, than be rescued. The point is everyone has a different version of the required necessities, but there may be an item that I/or someone else doesn't carry that may be viable, just a rant about what some of these things are...as for the bigger boat...maybe someday, for now I like the versitily of the 190...but still the number of times someone needed a tow for something as simple as a fuse is devastating...
