Good morning all!
Last night while inspecting my sterndrive and running the motor in the driveway I noticed an 8 inch length of black tubing (maybe 1/4" Inside diameter) protruding out from were the drive meets the boat on the port side. It is obviously the end of the tubing but the other end is connected to something somewhere. Anyone have a clue as to what this could be?? I have not noticed anything abnormal when operating the boat.

NEED HELP.

Is your speedo working? In my case I keep breaking the plastic part that the speedo hose connects to the outdrive with. I ordered two and plan to replace mine in the morning. That's what the hose looks like on mine when it breaks.

Never mind I see you have a Merc outdrive. Mine's a Volvo.

I checked all the parts diagrams, i see nothing for that. I could be blind though.

I would guess either speedo tube or trim sender connection. Usually the speedo tube would be more dead center than on the outside of the transom housing there so I'd lean toward trim.

Is your trim gauge working correctly?

As far as I know all guages were working. However, local mechanic says its the speedo tube. I will look to see if I can reattach using the information I received from him. However, my boat has both digital and mechanical guages so I may not notice if the trim guage isn't working as I usually see the digital one in the merc dts system.

Check your lower unit for water. Looks like the vent tube to me.

Vent for lower unit? for something that important you would think the tube and fittings would be more robust than that. Maybe I should just blow in it to see if the speedo moves.

Don't blow too hard, I see a lot of warnings about potential damage to the speedo from this on the net. Can you see any tube in the area that that open end connects to? I know that you can access and separate the pitot tube to blow out (away from the speedo) in an area just below where you are showing that end of tube. I remember on mine that this location was about a foot up from the bottom of the lower unit, tucked in the front side (toward bow) of the lower unit. Easily disconnected and reconnected. No tools needed. There was a schematic of this in the manual from merc as well, but I think it was not very easy to see on the drawing. I will look at mine this weekend.

Looks like it goes to the grease fitting on the transom assembly. Look just below that on the housing that bolts to the transom, should be a grease fitting. That tube goes to the back side of that.

Its the speedo tube for sure, no doubt. Connects down on the front of the lower portion of the outdrive to a little plastic fitting. Perhaps yours does not use it if they have a transom mounted pitot tube.
