We have a 1996 238 vista with the "auto gauges". The gauges are slowly failing. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement without having to purhcase from the dealer. Any ideas on cost for a replacment gauge cluster?
Thanks Paul and Lora

What do you mean by "auto" guages?

I'm fairly certain he means the VDO cluster.

Check out this thread. If you're reasonably handy, it would be best to build/replace with independent gauges. I think it will run you about the same as replacing the vdo cluster if you can get one. If you do some searching for vdo cluster you'll find that some have sent theirs in to the company (don't recall their name) for repair or adding a ground wire has helped. I've come to the conclusion that once enough of mine fail, I plan to replace with separate gauges like seriousrob did.

Yeah, I have the VDO gauges, and at this point, I've lost my tach, fuel, trim and depth finder. I'm sure it's a matter of time before the rest goes.
What is the deal with adding an additional ground wire?
That thread is very cool, very nice work.

I think this is the other thread that had details on the ground.

Your VDO cluster can be repaired, a company called RaPair/CDI in Alabama does it and it comes with a lifetime warranty as long as you follow their instructions. They add a ground wire internally that gets run all the way back to the battery. I know a place that has rebuilt ones in stock, if you are interested let me know, you have to give them your old one and they send you a rebuilt one. I think its a little over $300.

Many people switch out of the VDO gauges and move into Faria gauges that are individual. It requires a little bit of handy work to make the new cluster and following an easy to read wiring diagram. I think it looks better and done right costs around $200-250, but if you don't care just drop the $300 and have the original cluster fixed.

My H180 had individual VDO gauges not the auto cluster, but just as bad. I spent right around $300 replacing it all with Faria chesapeake ss black gauges, new switch covers, and a $120 dollar carbon fiber back plate. Totally changed the look of the boat.
