The other weekend I noted a fairly steady "burp" of oil a couple of times per minute while the boat was anchored at the shoal. Pulled it in at the end of the day (fun ride home in a surprise storm) and noticed a nice trickle of oil running out the prop. My first thought, hooray, another DIY to replace the prop seal. Then a discussion with the admiral aaaaand - second thought, the boat goes to the shop.

Well, got the word back from the shop - prop seal was completely toast (as in nearly none left) after a mess of line got caught up on the prop shaft.

$280 later I have a new seal and a boat that no longer leaks oil akin to the Exon Valdez.

The joys of owning a boat. So far I have averaged 1 fairly time consuming maintenance item per use.

Welcome to the REAL world of boating. Take some solas in that you are not alone, it happens to all of us.

Oh, I knew the phrase "Break Out Another Thousand" would be substantiated when I bought the thing.

Would still do it over.

Just think of it like you are renting the boat and it costs $75 to rent every time you take it out for a spin. That's assuming you don't go full throttle all day and spend that in gas per hour :)

You can also check to see if there's a thrust washer available with fishing line cutting capability. I had one on my last boat with a VP and never any problems.

Note to self; see if they're available for my SX drives

Here I go... Don't blame the fishermen for the stupidity of the wanna-be idiots who have no respect for others, lakes, oceans, environment etc. I enjoy fishing, and believe I am a responsible fisherman. Having said this I know professional "Fisherman" who cringe at the thought of even calling the weekend warrior "Wanna-be's" who come, take, poach, destroy, disrespect, and generally marr the reputation of the "Real Fishermen". This is true for all designations.
