I'm getting a DSM connection lost error quite frequently. I'm assuming the DSM is located behind the chart plotter?

I believe so. I have started to get the DSM connection lost error as well. Let me know what you find....

It is behind the plotter. I get the same error occasionally when retrieving the anchor. Voltage drops enough to cause it

When I spoke to raymarine they said the dsm should be wired with its own switch and be turned on after the windlass is used

Voltage drop plagues a lot of electronic gizmos.

It may also be a matter of too small of a wire gauge feeding the unit. FW has gotten low marks on this in the past, some circuits are pre-wired with a wire gauge that's only barely up to the load. As a result by the time the load is applied the drop of voltage becomes apparent. The simplest way to check this is to use a volt meter. Check the voltage at the battery. Then check it at the device, both while off AND while operating. If there's more than a 1 volt drop then it would probably be wise to consider re-wiring with a larger gauge wire.

FWIW, I've never pinned down why but I will randomly get 'Position Fix Lost' errors on my E-80. Sometimes it happens within a few minutes of powering up. Sometimes while underway. But never with any detectable consistency. Not after bumps, rolling or operation of other gear. I've chalked it up to a flaky GPS unit. This after already having checked the voltages (and installing additional batteries for the ship systems side).

Mine didn't act up when using the windlass, but I did use it on that trip.

Its going back to Raymarine for repair as soon as I get the loaner DSM from them. From what my searching came up with, this is an known issue with the DSM300.

Yes, a lot of times I get error messages when using the windlass as well. But lately have been loosing DSM communication when under way as well.

I seem to get the error while cruising. Generator and battery charger are on at that time also, so it doesn't sound like a voltage issue. My water temp is off, but that isn't a big deal. Having the annoying beeps that I need to acknowledge constantly and then the depth reappear instantly is a PITA.

Loaner DSM arrived today, this thing is HUGE. Will I be able to get it out if I remove the C80 from the dash?

Yes, the DSM is 'in' the dash. You take the plotter out and ideally you can get to it. as I recall, mine is off towards the steps a bit.

I'm not super impressed with Raymarine anything these days. I still haven't fixed my x-ducer, and I too get dsm-signal loss errors. I've also gotten a GPS location error recently that I can't attribute to anything obvious.

take some videos of getting the dsm out... Many of us would love to see it.
