any suggestions on a good vhf radio around $150.00..... looking for something simple to use.

Unless you boat exclusively on a very small inland lake, I would suggest a fixed mount VHF with a reasonable sized antenna. Hand held units are 1 watt of power and broadcast maybe five miles on a good day. A 25 watt fixed mount with a good 8' antenna that's properly matched will broadcast 17 to 20 miles.

It's up to you of course, and many install a fixed mount and still buy a hand held waterproof unit as a "emergency backup". You can never be too safe out there.

just bought the icom m72 handheld model. I mainly will be using it to communicate with the lockmasters, here on the mississippi river, for locking thru from time to time........ It is a 6 watt model. Should work o.k. for my needs..........
