Does anyone know off hand what the real difference is between the GMR 18HD and the xHD? I don't need to find birds for fishing, or extra density in the return signal...

Is there anything particularly special about the xHD that I would miss out on if I went with the HD version?

Could not tell you. I do have the 18HD. All I can tell you is, it works great. I love the overlays, but you should install an electronic compass. At slow speeds or stopped, the overlays will not line up with out it.

I would go the Garmin's web site.

The xHD weighs 2lb more, uses 30 watts (3 watts less), cost more, 48m range vs 36miles. 36 is more than enough for me, I just want to see between 1 to 10miles out.
