Bear with me as I haven't had time to fool with the thing, but on a recent coastal trip from south haven to Saugatuck, MI, my garmin 546s kept trying to take me over land. Wth? Doesn't it know I'm in a boat?

I have a different brand but you may have to go into settings and select the correct maps.

Actually, no it doesn't know unless you can change settings to keep you on the water. Also, it may not know if the water is too shallow, unless you can adjust settings for minimum depth. pay attention to your mapping program. You might want to create some routes for your favorite areas.

I have the GPS map 536 that is the freshwater version of the 546. The unit needs a SD card (Blue Water from Garmin) that has coastal maps for your area. Then it needs to be programed to maintain a minimum depth, boat draft, maximum rate of turn, and maximum course deviation. What the unit was doing was give you the direct line to your destination. I bought a power cable for about $20 and learned how to use the unit and all of the options while sitting at home with the full manual on my computer screen. That is much easier than trying to learn while on the water.

The GPS is a tool and you need to know when and how to adjust that tool. It sounds like you have the Vision G2 card and your using the Auto Guidance. Yes??

As someone already stated, you need to adjust depth and................ Even at that, I would not use it. I call Garmin on this many times and the really don't have a soild answer. But this Auto feature just @#$%!!
