Very cool, what brand of GPS mount is that and is it specific to the eTrex? I bought one that doesn't grip very well and the gps slides out. Side note...I have the same 2-bin accessory holder (bottom of picture 2, through the steering wheel), but the suction cups keep popping off. It's fine until the boat starts moving, then at least one cup will pop off. Did you use a trick to keep them holding? |

I really like that mount Mike. Where'd you pick it up, and how much did it set you back? The mount I have but have yet to install is the auto mount that uses a 3M adhesive pad to mount to the dash, but the GPS isn't fully locked into it. Do you have a mapping chip for your GPS? |

I don't use mapping chips, I just put a big enough microSD card in it that I can download all the detailed MapSource data for about half the U.S. at once and still have room for routes, tracks, etc. This is the 3rd eTrex Vista I've had and love them. I started with the original Vista, then a Vista C, and now the Vista Cx. I considered the 76CSx when I bought this one, but its overall size is much larger, and the screen is only very slightly larger when the total area is measured (i.e., the difference in screen size looks greater than it actually is). The Vista has no capability to connect an external antenna but so far I haven't needed to. That accessory bin is OK, but not great. It did loosen and slide down over the winter, but Sunday I was able to stick it back up where it is in the picture and it held with a relatively heavy hand held VHF in it on a VERY rough lake. The suction cups on it are just OK - not great. The mount is from RAM. They've had a great reputation for device mounts for years, and they have a solution for just about everything made. They aren't what I consider cheap, but the quality is unquestionable. Part of the secret is their modular design approach. That mount is actually two products. One is the suction cup & swivel, the other is the actual holder for the GPS. They have many, many different types of mounts - suction cup mounts, handlebar mounts, dash mounts, floor mounts for laptops, etc. - and holders for tons of devices. I didn't buy it direct, I think I got the part numbers from RAM's site and then bought the parts from Amazon IIRC (it was over the winter). http://www.ram-mount.com/ |

Mike, Looks very nice and functional! Seems to put the GPS close to eye-level. I love mods that don't involve cutting/epoxy, etc. Say, what's the final verdict on your new boatbuckle retractable transom straps mod? How'd they work on the first time out this season? Brian |

Thanks, guys! Yes, I was expecting to have to move the mount several times before finding just the right place for it, but that spot is the first try and it's perfect for me. Although it's a suction cup mount, it's a quality one and it's solid as a rock. Looking at the pictures you can see that it puts the GPS at a position where it doesn't interfere with anything else or visibility of any controls - yet I can see the screen literally just by shifting my eyes slightly. I really like it. The Boat Buckles ROCK. The way I did it turned out to be a major job and maybe didn't need to be, but they work great, I couldn't be happier with them. |

I just left it on, I don't see any good reason to remove it. |
