Update to my update:

I took my iPhone out on my little fishing boat on a local lake here in town and it DID provide me with real-time data. It showed me moving along on the lake map and adjusted as I progressed along my course. This was surprising to me and made me think MUCH more of this application.

I'm confused as to why this didn't work on my home lake. My only explanation is one of the following:

1. My unfamiliarity with it and not being patient/smart enough to figure it out; or
2. Some part of this app uses the G3 network (and not GPS by itself) to give you the real time data. This would make sense since the cell phone reception at my home lake is horrible and I rarely have a reliable signal on the water.

#2 doesn't make much sense to me since I got it to work and provide real time data while in "GPS" mode. Anyone have any answer? I'm willing to accept #1. :D

Maybe the Navy didn't see any point in covering Hickory County with the satellites? :D

Just kidding of course.

Paul - This may not fully explain your situation, but the GPS on the 3G iPhone works by using GPS, Cell Tower and WiFi data, crunching the information and triangulating your location from that. If you Google around you'll find a more comprehensive explanation. Since I have a first generation iPhone (soon to be replaced with the just announced 3GS) my location is approximated by cell towers only, so I would never use the device for precise navigation. For me, it was always more about having the supplemental source of chart and tide data. But I'm glad to hear you've had success with it. Does it occasionally shut down or is yours stable?

Mike, can't blame them for that. LOL.

Sierra, I have only had it shut down once. It has been otherwise reliable. I guess that makes sense about pulling info from all those places. Maybe I don't understand GPS well enough, but I thought it would do all that by itself. Oh well. Either way, the app is MUCH more than I originally thought. I'll mess with it a bit more in the coming weeks and see what I come up with on my home lake, too.

Yeah - that's been my whole point with this app. For $5, even if it didn't know your position, everything else makes it worth having. I was sitting at a restaurant the other day with some boating friends discussing where we should go. Moments later we were looking at charts and checking tides without getting up from our margaritas 8)

Yep. Beats having to jack with a map that can get wet or blown by the wind. Or, god forbid, you fold it up wrong and dad gets pissed. Not that I would know anything about that last one...

Very cool to have all the detail in that format-$5 makes it absolutely unbeatable. Not to mention the number of waterways you're getting v. the $10-20 for a single lake map setup that you used to be forced into.

Glad it works.

Now for thread jack:
I waited in line with the rest of the geeks on June 29th 2007 for my first iPhone ($500). Then, upgraded to the 3G ($400) because I couldn't wait for upgrade time. Now the new 3GS will cost me $500!

Shouldn't there be some type of customer loyalty program? $1,400 in two years!!!!!
I hate waiting for upgrade eligiblility.................

Ya they tried to get me to take one of those in order to stay with them. I was calling them to cancel from the AT&T store. Their sales pitch, "The new Palm is a lot like the iPhone...In fact, it works BETTER than the iPhone."

Sure it does.

No offense, Mike. Pretty sure that wasn't you I was talking to that day.

Another update: I've been trying to use this app when out fishing the past few days on a local lake here in KC. The app does nothing but crash repeatedly now.   Pretty useless if it just shuts off all the time.

That's it's way of saying, "WTF are you doing trying to fish in Kansas City?"

Umm, even the 32 gig iPone 3G S is only $299. The 16 gig version is $249. I understand that there are planty of 16 gig iPhone 3G models available at $199. Although these are new 2 year subscription or 'upgrade' prices.

After I posted my complaint, I discovered that there is a June 15 ,2009 update available for this application. I downloaded it and will give it a shot tomorrow night. Would be nice if the update was "debugged."
