I wonder if i may answer my own question having read the posts last summer. 190H 1998, factor fitter depth finder (I assume). Travelling in marked 30 foot channel, along with MUCH bigger vessels and depth goes from 20 odd feet to 1.6 foot to 4 foot to 2.2 feet and then back to 24 feet. Whilst i KNOW i must be in deep water, there are areas where i boat that 4 foot is entirely possible very quickly so need it to work well. Is this a sign of (imminent) failure? Dirty connections? Dirt on the underside of the boat (It's kept in water)? Having read the posts already i will clean connections (on what i think is the transducer), dive and clean the bottom....but if people can come up with other suggestions/reassurances i'd be grateful. Welcome Gbarnett,

We had/have the same issue with ours. I would first check all wires and make sure nothing is loose. But based on your post it sounds a lot like our experience.

I found that a small amount of film on the transducer can cause wild readings. I make it a point before each outing to wipe the transducer down with a good cleaning solution. This has solved our issue and always read correctly, unless we are doing over 30 :twisted: than it cant keep up.

Agreed. Lots of stuff around docks and boat ramps can create that film, not to mention algae buildup if you are slipped in the water full-time.

To extend this thread, what if the depth/temp sensor is telling you the water is 130F? That's what mine was reading over the winter, when I'm sure the water was around 35F. I've not checked it recently. I'm figuring the element died or something. Just what I want, to spend $300 to pull the boat to replace a much less expensive sensor....
