I'm looking for a hand held GPS to navigate a local lake. Never used one before so I want to make sure this one will work well on the water. Also, need to keep the price under $200. Will this do the job?

Welcome.
I use the eTrex on my local lake. I am very familiar with it, and the GPS is primarily used as an accurate speedo when skiing. Comes in handy at night too! I do not use any lake-specific software, just the generic biking/hiking stuff that came with it, as it is also used on the bike.

Hope that helps.

Sound like this might be a good investment. Does anyone know if you can aquire lake specific sotware/maps to navigate with? I boat on a lake with around 900 miles of shoreline so it can get tricky remembering where to turn.

You could always just download the appropriate Navionics Navigation App for an iPhone or Android if you have one....much cheaper and VERY effective.

Don't have a phone with that option. I've been searching the net but most handheld GPS units seem to be geared toward land use. Most users are not impressed with the
maps that come loaded with these units.

I just noticed that West Marine has the Garmin GPSMap 76Cx on sale right now for $179. I have one and use it both on land in the car (with the road map card), and on the water with the bluechart card. Works great, is waterproof and even floats if you drop it in the drink!

I am happy with it, although I like having a paper chart along with the GPS, just to get the big picture of where I am.

Yeah, I just got the 76CX and have the inland lakes card on the way. Got a winshield mount today so I think I'm set.
