Recently mounted a GPS/Fishfinder combo and was wondering if the reading will be correct if my boat is moving backwards? I've noticed if I stop the boat and try to go into reverse the readings will get all wacky, even scaring me with the depth alarm.

You might be geting wacky depth alarms in reverse due to air cavitation under the sender. Mine seems to work OK in every other regard when going backward.

Unless you're going slow or trolling the depth alarm is useless. Because by the time it detects you're in shallow water you're already going too fast to do anything about it. Better to know the waters or consult charts (chartplotters are great).

Water cavitating under the sensor will definitely cause it to misread. Our 348 gets screwy when I'm over 30mph. Today it told me I was in 149ft of water... in the Miles River (as in, not possible anywhere on the middle Chesapeake). If I slow down a bit the readings settle in properly. In my case it's due to the bow rise and then agitated water running under the boat and across the sensor.
