I am in the market for a coffee maker for the boat and am wondering whether I should go with a 12 volt off the cigarette lighter, or 120 volt off my inverter.

Which is better, what do you use?

If you want your coffee in the morning when you wake up, 120v If you don't mind waiting until mid morning for the first cup, a 12 v pot will do

Just make sure you carry along a spare impeller for your genset. Ours crapped out one Sunday morning just as it was brewing my coffee. Grrrrr....

Good news is it's an easy job to replace. Now I carry a spare. I will NOT be deprived of my morning coffee ever again....

I was going to buy a 12v at one time until they told me it would take 45 min to make a pot. Way to long for me to wait !!

Thanks for the replies and advice. I have never used a 12V appliance before and to tell you the truth, I was alittle sceptical of them.

I have to find one that uses 850 watts or less, or it means replacing the inverter as well. No expense too great for a cup of coffee in the morning!

We bought a 120V Cuisinart 4-cup that fits perfectly in the galley. It was about $30 at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I need that first cup FAST!

I hear you! I also have a 4 cup. Not only does it fit good in the galley area, and brew up real fast, but I believe the 4 cup models draw less amperage than the larger ones, so getting back to Guinnydog's concern about the 850 watt inverter, which gives you approx 8 amps, I think the 4 cup model will be absolutely no problem.

It's mounted on slides to allow easy removal for cleaning and getting to the small bits of cabinet space behind/next to it. I like this one because it uses a thermal carafe, not one with a heating element. This way it keeps the coffee warm without overheating it, or wasting the electric doing so. Seriously consider getting one with an insulated carafe instead of a heating element, you'll save power and avoid burned tasting coffee!

Filling it is easy using the slide-out water container on the right side. It has a timer built into it but unless we're on shore power it's sorta pointless. No AC means no coffee maker and I'm not running the genset all night just to keep the time ready to go. It generally makes our coffee in about 5 minutes.
