I recently installed the Mercury SmartTachs in place of my analog tachs. I have gone through the programming of the tachometers themselves, and the dealer has used a CDS tool to program each engine to Port/Starboard. The tachs are reading properly.

The issue I am having is the port key controls power to both tachs. When the starboard key is in the on position, the tach is not powered up. When the port key is in the on position, both tachs are powered. So, if I run just the starboard motor, the port key needs to be on for the tach to function.

Any ideas where to start looking?

Hmmmm... There is no way to wire it incorrectly so it has to be software/setup wouldn't you think? What about a master reset? That might require the dealer again.

Perhaps a communication with Mercury is in order.

Have you ever looked at the Verado owners site? They did have smartcraft info a while back, have not looked there in a while.

Just found out my friend with a 340 Sundancer has the same issue. Might not be a way around it...but the end of the world either.

Is it possible they have a programmable master / slave power relationship? I know my chartplotter has settings that would do that. As in the port tach is the master and starboard tach (slave) is powered on by the port tach.

Both tachs are programmed to port/starboard as is the engines.

Sounds like a no brainer to me.

Feed power to the starboard tach from the starboard ignition switch.

Feed power to the port tach from the port ignition switch.

Or did I miss something here :D

No "power" cable...only a cable from the Junction box.
