Post subject:  SX Cobra Trim Pump - Down & No Up!
I'm hoping someone might be of some help here?!
Got stuck out on the water yesterday when the trim pump would only go down & not up.
I managed to hot-wire it so I could at least get home.
I've sanded all the ring terminals on the trim pump and the two connectors above the starboard rocker cover.
I've attached a multimeter on the switch's wires & get voltage when I press both the up & down.
I can not find any relays as part of this 4 wire system & am stumped as to whet else to try.
I removed # 5 part but it's a sealed unit with the PCB encased in resin.

Did you hit the pump motor with something heavy and metallic? Once and a while the SX-M trim pumps need some percussive maintenance.

The motor works fine, I'm thinking it seems to be the electronics that is switching the motor's polarity?

The relays are usually mounted onto the pump/ reservoir bracket, along with a fuse.

I can not find any relays throughout the wiring & am assuming they are encased in the circuit breaker housing (picture 2)...

On my 2000 h180 they were there. The system can not work without relays. Worked fine when I nailed the pump with a hammer too :)

I'm going to wire in an external relay to bypass the faulty (un-replaceable) 'up' relay circuit.
A shifty fix, but I'm not paying almost $400 to fix such a simple device! :P

I looked up the schematics. Yes, no separate up/ down relays in 1997 ! I'd be tempted to fit separate up and down relays whilst you are rewiring it rather than just one, it's only a mater of time before the other one fails.

Does anyone see any obvious reasons as to why I couldn't bypass the entire OEM trim pump relay system, in place of a reversing solenoid - from a 4x4 or windlass winch application?

My old OMC Cobra uses a relay system I see no reason why you could not wire around that expensive Volvo add on.
Take a look at the parts diagrams at:

pic OMC as the manufacturer, model years 86-93 are the old style like mine, 94-98 were the joint venture with Volvo models, perhaps on the earlier years of that series they might have used regular relays. The main thing is that it has to be able to handle the high amperage in that circuit.

Fitted the new $150 solenoid and the up trim still won't work! :evil:
I can jump the trigger terminals to the motor terminals & it works perfectly, so I'm going to buy a DPDT Momentary (on/ off/ on) switch today to now try.
Damn - Electronics do my head in!!! :(

In this situation it's not electronics; just simple electrics ( relays, switches and cables). I'm going to bed now, it's 23:00 local time and I'm an old guy. I'll think about it tomorrow !

Are you absolutely sure that there is no break in the wire inside the remote control handle that might be causing this issue?
What happened with mine was kind of comical. I had replaced the FW sport style wheel (got corroded in the salt air) with a destroyer style stainless wheel with spinner knob. Every now and then when I would use the trim while having my other hand on the wheel I would get a shock! As if the current from the trim system was passing through the handle of the remote seeking a ground. I took the handle off and found a few breaks in the wire and fixed that with liquid electrical tape. That was about 5 years ago, no issues since.
