Hi there:

I have a 2008 H200 with a 5.7l Volvo-Penta engine.

I put it in the water this year and the Faria depth gauge shallow water alarm went off and stayed on even though I was in deep water. The depth gauge is not registering the depth at all.

Would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on what is the possible problem and fix.

Thank you ,

Try disconnecting the transducer cable from the back of the gauge and clean the contacts with some electrical cleaner (spray good and allow to dry). Electrical cleaner can be purchased at most auto parts stores and I think Walmart carries it as well.
Probably just a little corrosion on the connector pins and it is not making good contact.

Does it look like this

You can call Faria for troubleshooting pointers
I think there depth sounders use an Airmar Transducer which is filled with liquid, and a common problem is the liquid gets low. You can take it apart and put in 2.4oz of glycerin from a pharmacy

Yes, that is what it looks like.

I will follow up with Faria.

Thank you for the information. I will update this post when I, hopefully, have a resolution

Cheers,

Sometimes just wiping off the face of the transducer with a wet hand is all that's needed.

Folks, I followed up Faria and they provided the same tips as the other members of this forum. The issue seems to be the transducer and it will need to be replaced.

The best price for both the gauge and In Hull transducer is $128USD. Would anyone have any other suggestion on where I could make this purchase??

Thank you,

I also have a bad Faria depth finder. My normal mechanic said the don't usually last long and the transom mounted transducers tend to last longer but suggested to not even bother and just get a new chartplotter with depth finder built in since mine is a little old.
That's about the price I have been seeing as well. Check Amazon, they have some transoms mounted ones for cheaper.

The Faria sounder leaves much to be desired. I installed a Garmin chartplotter and sounder and it is much better than the Faria. I just shut off the Faria each time I start the boat and keep it as a spare sounder

I agree, get a Garmin, I put one in about 3 years ago and its one of the best upgrades I have done. I used to have an old school Humminbird fishfinder/sounder that used to lose bottom at planing speeds. The Garmin never does, and has a lot of other neat features.
My old boat did have some kind of a sounder from the factory, but the read out was long since removed from the dash (there was just a hole there, now I have a gas vapor detector in that spot) but the transducer is still glued to the inside of the hull. When I installed the Garmin I used a transom mount transducer and I interfaced the Garmin with the VHF radio, to give one push button emergency call functions (Your radio will transmit your lat&lon coordinates).

+1 on a finder / sounder. One of my first "upgrades" was to install a Lowrance Elite 5 on my boat. Don't fish- just use it for depth and GPS. Also hooked into my GPS in case of emergency. It really came in handy on the night of the 4th navigating home in total fog / darkness. 10 miles was a 1.5 hour adventure!
