The foot switches work fine but the helm switch (wired factory) does not work. I have checked and even swapped the fuse in the helm panel.
I am guessing a bad connection somewhere since the switch does not work up or down.
Again, foot switches work fine so I can eliminate motor, solenoid, main power, fuse.

Questions
How do you remove the switch (hard to get to from the back) to check the connections there?
Anyone else experience this and have a solution?

Of course, I can start tracing wires and connections until hopefully I find the bad one but hoping someone has an idea.

There's a 5A fuse for the windlass helm switch, position #8 at the fusebox below the shift lever. Orange wire to the helm switch, Red/ black cable out for up, black/ red for down.

I had to access the wiring/ take some switches out on my 278; I found it easiest to ease the faux wood panel forwards ( held on by nuts on threaded studs; the studs on mine were quite long, a deep 1/4" drive socket proved useful). That gave access to the wiring and the switch retaining clips, without risking damage to the visible surface.

I managed to reach the switch from underneath and pull the wires back far enough to get a meter on them.
Once I did this, it started working.
My guess is a little corrosion on the switch connections.
Pushed back on good and everything is working fine.

I guess I got lucky and it was the first thing I checked.

Update:
This weekend it would not work again.
Doing some more digging, I found that the voltage to the switch was very erratic.
Opened the connector under the dash and the power lead going thru the connector (pin) was burned and broken.
I guess somehow it was arching inside the connector.
I cut the wire going into the connector (Power input) and installed a wire straight to the switch.
Everything works great.

You might want to check that connector under your dash and see if any of the pins are burnt or missing if you have a similar problem.
To open connector slide the orange retainer to the side and push down on the locking tab to pull apart.
