transom lights and the other end

I was looking at adding some underwater LED transom. I really dont want to to drill large hole in the transom. I'm also looking at a set of docking lights for the bow. Any recomendations?

Try these: OceanLED Amphibians They come in three different colors and 3, 6 or 12 LED models. Requires one small hole in the transom. My summer project (providing funds available from the Admiral) is to put three 6 LED lights on my transom.

Looks like a knock off of the lights from Abyss Technology

I don't know about the quality of these underwater lights on ebay. OceanLED lights are used on many of the large expensive yachts such as Sunseeker, Hatteras, Ocean Yachts, etc.

Innovative Lighting is a good reputable company regarding the dock lights but beware, I believe they are plastic as they come in black and white too. Perko has a LED Dock Light that you might find interesting. It is chrome plated bronze which will last probably the life of your boat.

I am not trying to push you to my direction, just consider with either, you want to install whatever you buy once and have it be of high enough quality that they aren't a constant source of pain Remember, the installation of both of these products require you cut holes in your boat. :shock:

Youre not pushing me at all. I'm under the same do it right and do it once. I am looking at the Abiss light for the transom. I havent checked into the docking lights as much. Thanks for the info, that why i came here first

You might want to consider a remotely operated spot light instead of the docking lights. I've had both, and the spot light is SOoooooooooo much more usefull. Of course, it would typically cost more. You can get wired or unwired remote control. Naturally, the unwired renote costs more.

After doing a but of reasearch I'm thingking of making a mould and wire my own lights and some electrical potting material. With a dozen super bright LEDS I bet I could do it for under $50

I seem to recall reading a couple of DIY lighting jobs, possibly on the boat us forums. It can be done. I think one guy did it by making a box for them, sealing it and mounting that to the transom.

I installed docking those exact lights last winter.... Not worth the effort in my opinion. Unless you just want the look of them. I am not sure if it was the location I installed mine at or alignment or whatever else might be the cause but they don't light up anything useful. I tried them once and never hit the switch again since!

I've had great success with my wired remote light on our 348. But if I didn't have one I'd go with a hand-held spotlight WAAAAAY before I'd bother with "docking lights". They're just not useful enough to justify the cost and effort to install them. If they came that way from the factory I'd leave them on the boat but really wouldn't ever bother using them. It's really not the area directly in front of you that you need to see on a moonless night. It's the areas farther to the port/starboard that become important. Like where the bow is going to swing when we come around while docking.

That and I've seen far too many idiots running up on plane at night, thinking those 'docking lights' are somehow useful as headlights. They're not. Worse yet they destroy MY night vision as they're coming toward me. Nitwits.

Dock lights are wonderful! They illuminate every bug within 3 feet. For anyting other than that, they are completely useless. I knew this even when I bought myboat with docking lights. They simply look cool!

My docking lights are great when I want lots of light at the back of my truck when hooking up the chains, lights, and such. Not much other use for them.

A note about docking lights....

Thats just it...they are docking lights. You are not permitted to use them when you are out on the water, except when docking. They hardly reach out far enough to do anything anyway really in terms of using them as headlights in the open water. I could be wrong, but I have been told that at least in Texas, this is the case.
