I had a Promariner Promite 5/5 charger in my FW, but the new owner insisted as part of the deal I leave it in the boat. So I find myself looking to put one in the new boat and can't see the advantage or disadvantage between the Promite 5/5 and the Prosport8. Only real difference I see is the Promite chargers at 10 Amps and the Prosport8 at 8 Amps. Anyone have expierence with the Prosport8? The promite did the job very well, but just wondering as I can get either one locally for near the same price.

I think I posted in another thread about this. I got the ProSport 12 as a gift and so far, I think its great. Granted...its basically just a maintainer at this point since I got it installed in the off season. My stereo, although loud, is very efficient and I have yet to run either battery down. Before I had the onboard charger, I would occassionally throw my old charger on the batteries to make sure they were always topped off. Also, its about having a routine. I rotate which battery I run on weekly so they both get an equal amount of use, up and down. Since its a 12 amp charger, I am sure it will work fine for me. An 8 amp just means a slower charge...but thats probably not that big of a deal anyway since you would most likely plug in the boat overnight or longer. If you were charging trolling motor batteries that are getting run down daily...8 amps may not quite get it done for you. In your situation, its probably safe either way.

Yes with previous charger I just plugged it in when ever boat was parked at home which is all summer when not on the lake. I just like to know that both batteries always have a good charge in them. Just wondering what it better for the life of the battery? 8 Amps or 10? I have been that guy before at the boat launch with a dead battery! This was my first FW and it only had one battery. I never did like having just one, but that boat had no room for an extra one.

If you're just using it as a maintainer, IMO 8 amps is more than enough. A bigger concern is how smart the charger is in terms of backing down the amps and how low it can go when the battery is charged or nearly so.

Mike's got it. I second that.
