in a hurry to get the boat out one day late last summer i found my battery dead, i swapped it out with a charged one and connected it up backwards. obviously the boat wouldnt start. re-connected battery the right way, reset 50 amp cb and was able to get accessories to come on but still wouldn't start. now i dont get any accessory power and the boat still wont start. i see in the schematic diagram that there is a 15 amp port ignition cb but i can't for the life of me locate it. i get absolutely nothing when i turn the key, no accessories no pumps running. it's almost as if the battery isnt installed at all.

things i have checked:
EFI fuses
50 amp breaker

i have a 2005 four winns 214 funship with the mercruiser 5.0 MPI

any help on troubleshooting would be appreciated

I'd check all the fuses first.
If they all look good you might have damaged the battery.
Do you have a volt meter. A good battery should show around 13 to 14 volts.
If your under 12 that would be a good sign that the battery might be fried.

In my boat, there is a circuit breaker in the battery line between the battery and the battery switch. In my boat, it's in the bilge area. Follow the red battery lines and you should find it. Make sure it's reset.

Also make sure all the small battery leads were re-connected. Sometimes they fall off to the side when removing the battery. I've made a habit of running a zip ty through them when removing the batt so I don't leave any out in the spring.

thanks for the help guys. i'll check these as soon i get the chance. one thing i did notice lat night was when connecting a fully charged battery i get no spark at all when connecting the leads to the battery. i always thought i saw a small spark as the leads are being connected.

Sounder--are you running dual batts or am i not understanding what you mean by battery switch. i am currently only running a single batt. i'll check for the cb on the red cable.

Roger--i checked all the fuses i could see. i referenced the mercruiser manual to locate them. i found 3 for the EFI and all looked good. are there any other fuses i should be looking for? i dont have a volt meter but can either get one or take the batt to an auto store to get it checked.

i just read this post. i did the same thing once, and it blew an angine fuse, which on the 5.0L Merc lives on the starboard side of the block. hard to get to, its basically a big metal fuse, rather then a glass or plastic auto type fuse. gots me A$50 to replace, and hey presto, all was back to normal

it turned out to be a couple of things. one was the 90 amp fuse on the starter solenoid and the other was dirty/loose connections at the battery. once cleaned and re-tightened everything was fine. taking it out for the first time this season tomorrow, the start of my memorial day weekend!

a big thanks to everyone who pitched in to help me out with this one. i know it took me a while to post back, but i do appreciate all the help!! now on to the other topics on this forum for other fun projects!
