Post subject:  I'm just full of questions today.. Mallory Marine? Good?
I'm in the spending mood lately.... but this one I need. When I originally bought the boat I had to scrape the corrosion off the cap to get it started. I have since never replaced the cap/wires/rotor/plug and it's starting to run rough.

I know Mallory makes good car stuff. How are they for boats? I was going to get the tune up kit (cap/rotor), their 8mm promaster wires, and NGK Iridium IX 3689 plugs. Are they worth the money or should I just go with the generic sierra stuff and save myself a few bucks?

I know using the Rotella T and KN filter raised my oil pressure by nearly 20psi. I want to keep this upwards trend of improvement.

Be careful!!! Car "stuff" is not rated to be ignition proof. Nor is it designed for the harsh environment of a boat. The filters are one thing, but any thing to do with electrical is another.

+1 on Pauls comment. Make sure you use "Mallory Marine" and not just regular Mallory - they're different. I've used plenty of Mallory stuff on race engines and always found it to be pretty reasonable as well. Check how much the OEM parts are first - believe it or not, sometimes they are pretty reasonably priced!

I should take delivery of my H220SS today I am so excited! As far as the oil pressure it was normal why would you want to raise it ? I have the volvo penta 5.7 Gi 300 I definitely want that K&N filter I have it on all my cars and it works great and saves gas also.

Why would you want your oil pressure up over normal?? Unless you installed a bigger pump? I am NO master mechanic, but my best guess would be: That the oil filter it not letting the oil freely pass though it. There for causing your oil pressure to rise above normal. Also, if this is true, then your engine is not getting the oil it needs and could be causing more wear than normal.

I would not put NGK plugs in that engine. Use AC Delco. I bought all the ignition parts for my 5.7L VP motor after a rebuild from NAPA. They cross-reference VP parts and were marine certified. 1/2 the price, same quality.

NGK lists two plugs for the 3.0 liter VP engine on their website.

TR6IX Iridium plug
BPR6EFS Standard plug

Iridium is the only way to go. They will last the life of the boat never needing to be replaced again.

Same rules do apply for a boat or car engine. Internally, a 5.0 VP/M or 4.3 uses the identical parts to your buddies old GMC Jimmy or 1985 Camaro ZZ8. There are no such thing as "marine" blocks, heads, pistons, rings, bearings. It may have different accessories installed, but under those special marine carbs and ignition systems... it's no different then what's cruising the streets in 1980.

The only special marine parts that are needed per USCG are distrubtor, alternator, starter, and back fire proof filter on the carb.

The rest are just gimmicks to sell you special "marine" parts. If these no name brand "marine" parts were so great and better then automotive stuff, why are not people using them on their cars??

Enlighten me then. Let's pick something easy. Explain to me scientifically what the differences are in lets say... a marine oil filter compared to automotive. What are the physical differences between the two and what makes a marine oil filter different and better for my boat?

I thought we were talking about marine vs. automotive engines on this hi-jacked thread ? Not engine accessories and or add on's. Must have mis understood you again.

Well, you're just dodging my question now. I've had girlfriends better then this. Okay, let's stay on your topic. Explain to me with physical differences between a mercruiser 5.0 engine vs. the automotive 5.0.. the famous chevy 305 that was found many car/truck applications. Aside from the potential cam profile differences of course.
