Hello I noticed that my trim guage in not reading correctly on my Horizon 180. Just received the boat and checking it all out in the garage. wanted to get a few of the small issues corrected before spring. any ideas or is this common for the Four Winns cluster? Its a 1997 Horizon 180. Thanks.

It's more likely a problem with the sender unit on the drive, or the wires connecting to it. It's a fairly common failure.

I haven't done it, but I understand the part is pricey. My advice is to call http://www.dougrussell.com with your specific engine & drive info (i.e., "5.7Gl-A with an SX-M", not "a 5.7 with an SX"). That's information you'll need to have anyway, now or later. They should be able to help get you to a part number & price. Once you have the part number, make a note of it somewhere and plan to update that with other part numbers you need in the future. It can become a very helpful resource as time goes on.

There is some troubleshooting you can do before laying down any money, though. Here are a couple of links to get you started:

is it not reading correct or does it not work at all? if its just off a simple sender adjustment will likely correct it.

Good point, Brian, I may have assumed too much from the original post.

It reads. It's just off alittle. How do you adjust the sensor ?

Typically it has 2 screws on the side of the outboard holding the sender. Loosen them and rotate the sender until it reads where you want it. These senders are not very robust. I went through two of them in 3 years before I just quit using the trim gauge. Mine was never very accurate anyway.

+1

The only time my trim gauges ever worked properly was on my 91 Sundowner with the OMC King Cobra. All of my Volvo-Penta powered boats 97+, the trim gauges always flake out and stop working.

I use the sound/feel method. Which is alittle more challenging now that I have twin engines, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Hello I just bought a 2002 Horizon 220 and the trim gauge is not working. I pulled the dash out to see if it was connected.... The wires running to the bolt connectors are all attached. There is a 2 wire plug in that is not attached to anything. After looking all over on the underside of the dash there is NO loose plug ins any where.... Does any one have any thoughts? Does it have to be connected to something? Is that just a check/adjustment plug? Thank you

UPDATE------ After talking to Fourwinns they told me the answer to the problem... 1. The plug does not need to be attached to anything and 2. Look at the wiring on the outboard. The sensor may need to be replaced. (after looking at sensor and finding wires cut) Problem found. Any ideas on how to replace the sensor??? lol
