Time to replace my trim sender. I've got the two wire (part #3594989) on my boat now and was wondering if I could use the 3 wire (part #3849411) in place of it. I've read you could but just wondered if anyone here knew for sure or had replaced their 2 with a 3 wire. Thanks for any input. |

I think you actually can but its been a while since I had to replace one. I know the sender itself is the same and how it attaches, I think you just use the 2 wires that are the same as the old one and it works. |

Funnily enough, I just fitted a 3 wire one to my boat that had a 2 wire one originally. (New; I got it very cheaply off ebay a few years ago for something like $20). Connected it ( not using the 3rd, white wire) up a few hours before the boat was being towed to the marina for launching. I couldn't get the trim gauge to move at all ! However, connecting up a multimeter to the sender (as I had also done when i first bought it before) showed it was working (and could be ajusted to the initial 11 Ohm "drive fully down" setting). It looks like I have a faulty gauge or a break in the wiring somewhere, no time to sort it out before launching. |

Sorry to hear about your gauge Graham. The 3 wire should work fine on a 2 wire application though, correct? Just shrink wrap the end of the white wire and call it good? |

I have a VDO Vision gauge, pretty sure it still works. $10 shipped http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... id=1663315 |

Thanks Ric; I'll bear that in mind if I need another one . Might cost you a fair bit to ship it to the UK though !! Seriously, I need to have a proper look at mine and the associated wiring. The voltage at the dash is reading a little low as well, but it's fine at the batteries and alternator. Bad connections (again!) might be to blame. I just didn't have the time on the day it was launched and the rain and wind turned up soon after the first trip out. Like in the Summer game of Cricket, "Rain stiopped play". |
