Post subject:  Waterproofing cover questions

I treated my bow and cockpit covers last week according to the instructions othe bottle, wandered over othe deluge today and was hoping it would be beading off like a newly waxed car :).... And while some of it was other parts were not. For the record it looked about the same as all the other boats there too.

Did I do it wrong, is that normal, or something else....not a huge deal just curious

FWIW, I waterproofed my covers in the spring as well, and they still let some water through. I just run two covers, a trailering cover over my bow/cockpit covers, and that keeps all the water out, even in the heaviest downpour

First, how old is your cover ?? older ones like mine, needed 2 coats and then a light 3rd coat in the area's where water collect.

What did you use to waterproof ? I used 303, and it took a gallon to do my mooring cover as I mentioned above, and once coat on bimini / camper top since this was in much better condition since it is not out in the sun as much.

pretty old I assume, boat is 14 and no reason to think the cover is newer,

I used starbrite with ptfe, about a half gallon. I will put another few coats on and see.

Do you clean the cover first? If so, how do you do it?

I scrub mine with Woolite. It won't leave any soap residue

Do you do it on the boat, or off?

I ran mine through the washer on delicate with a touch of soap....think thats what screwed up the stitching but don't know, luckily the pooping birds at the marina prefer the mastercraft wakeboarding boats :) <<<<so far>>>

Go to http://www.greatlakesboattop.com and click on the canvas info.
I take all the covers, bimini and all off. Lay them in the drive way and scrub away. Hang them up on a makesift line rinse and let them dry.( do not put in washing machine) Spray two coats of 303 Fabric Protectant letting each coat dry before rehanging
