Post subject:  Holy cow! Quote for re-striping/re-lettering boat

I own a 2000 298 Vista and recently had the stripes and registration numbers removed before having it compounded and waxed. I want all new graphics (including the name) and I just received this $789 quote and I want to know if you think this is insane like I do?

Quote:
Good evening. Below is the estimate you requested. We will need your credit card number to secure the order and send you layouts.

30' long x 1" thick black (top) and silver (bottom) stripes for both sides with 1/4" space in between = $420.00 plus tax

"JuJu" for transom in black and silver = $96.00 plus tax (in cursive)

boat registration numbers in black and silver = $24.00 each plus tax

3 hours of installation by Friday = $225.00

Thanks,

Bryan

Plan B is to go the DIY route with no stripes for now and then put them on later in the spring (I own the trailer so no cost to pull my boat out). Any references for a place that will print my registration and name graphics? Has anyone gone with no stripes because it really doesn't look too bad?

the Hull registration numbers on the bow custom cut shout be about $15-30 I paid $17 for mine.. transom Name should be around $50-100 depending who installs. Strips should be around 150-200. I for sure would get more than that one quote as it seems very high. i would say materials and labor you should be in the 350 area.

That is what I was anticipating, $300 to $400. When I first bought the boat, the registration and name ran around $200 but the person had to drive from another lake and I am sure there had to be a trip fee in there. I can't find anyone that does this type work anymore and the guy that quoted me is just a sign company and doesn't even advertise boats. I guess it is all DIY now. Thanks.

30 foot long? That's gonna add up!

Time to learn how to do these things yourself.
Figure the labor rate around $100.00hr with a min

Have you checked eBay or with Four Winns on the 30' stripe tape? They should have it available, for much cheaper! The name ran me about $50 and install is a breeze.

I couldn't find stripe tape on the Four Winns' site but I need to check later years. Thanks.

Find a store in your area that deals in exclusively automotive paint supplies. They should carry a variety of 3M tape rolls in diff colors and lengths

I cut my own vinyl stickers and graphics. Depending on what material someone buys and labor, $700-800 would not be out of line if it is the good stuff. Also, did this guy have to buy 100' x 12" wide to make your stripe??? If so, that could have been a chunk of his expenses.

Now, for thin, cheap vinyl with little to no UV protection, sure they can be had for much less $$$$.

I invested in software, a cutter and took time to learn to do it myself. But I enjoy doing all these projects on the boat myself.

I just received a quote from a guy that has done work for many members on http://www.thehulltruth.com so you know he does good work. $185 for registration, name and stripes. I have to install everything but people do it all the time and I can easily follow the old stripe lines where the gelcoat faded. Should I be concerned about the stripes being in 15' sections?

Quote:
Here is what I have come up with on your lettering/stripes:

Registration numbers: $35
Boat Name : $60
Striping : $45 for Black and $45 for gray

That comes to a total of $185. I obviously would have to ship them to you and they would be shipped via a tube. I usually collect $7 for shipping. The registration numbers and the boat name will come with a clear application tape for you to easily apply to the boat. The striping will not have application tape applied to them. I will have them cut in the 15' sections as we discussed. So there will be two black 15' sections for each port and starboard side and the same with the gray. I do want to mention I do not have a "silver" as you mentioned. I have a gray that obviously looks silver. If you are ok with the above quote and the colors let me know. I will do a sample for the boat name to be sure the font selection is acceptable.
