Hello - My wife and I decided to take the plunge. :shock: We have now graduated from a waverunner to a boat. Our boat is on order and should arrive sometime in March. This is our first boat.
We live in TX and the majority of the lakes we'll be going to will be in TX (mud/clay bottom). I will be taking the boat to Table Rock Lake, MO (rock bottom), probably once a year. I've been trolling the forum for a couple of weeks now and only seen one post discussing anchors and only one opinion offered. I'm very interested on peoples opinions, good and bad, on anchors. Thank you!

I use a danforth style anchor in sand/mud bottom lakes with 6' of chain. I think it's a 10-12# anchor and has held strong when rafted up with 2 other boats, including a 22' deck boat.

The opinion you saw may have been mine, so forgive me if this is a repeat. We boat at TR every year. If you aren't aware, many areas of TR are 200' deep, even a short distance from shore, so you need a LONG rode for that lake. In fact I bought a 200' rode just for use at TR; I have a 75' rode that I use everywhere else (KS lakes).

The Chene anchor works very well for us at TR and everywhere else, and is cheap compared to many anchors. We started with a Digger anchor and nearly had to cut it loose every time we used it at TR because of all the wood and rock on the bottom. When hauling an anchor up from those depths, the weight of the anchor can become an issue; the Chene is also one of the lighter anchors out there. Hope this helps.

I still use the same 24# danforth with 6ft of chain and 30 ft rope that held my 23' sailboat in place for a small hurricane in New England years back. The only problem is like Mike says..... it's heavy, you usually bring up a big branch when you pull it up, and I'm afraid to snag the plug and accidentally drain the lake :wink:
A smaller danforth or even one of them cheapo muchroom anchors should work fine in light winds. Use a few feet of chain at the end though. helps a bunch!

Thanks guys for the replies. I am aware that TRL is a very deep lake. I may give the Chene a try. As you may or may not know, the h210ss has a locker on the bow that looks like it is made specifically for the fluke style anchors. It looks like the Chene will fit that spot as well. Specifically, there are groves for the bar on the anchor to slip into and if the bar is too long I could just shorten it enough to make it fit. I have a friend that has a lakehouse on TRL and bought one of the box anchors and swears by it. The problem is I hate how heavy it is and there is no way to neatly store it in the bow storage. I guess I just want 1 anchor that will hold in all conditions/surfaces. Sounds like from 230Mike's experience the Chene will do just that. BTW, is Chene a type of anchor or the brand name?

Good question. I know it's a brand name; I think that's all.

The way it fits in my anchor locker is kind of funky. The "body" of the anchor is too wide to sit "properly" in those grooves. I keep a stainless snap on the anchor, and use it to attach to the appropriate rode depending on where we're anchoring. While in the locker, I detach the rode and store it separately. I put the "body" of the anchor down through the rectangular hole in the locker, and "hang" it by the snap on a ~12" long piece of 1/4" steel rod (which takes the place of the bar on a fluke anchor). The rod then sits in those grooves in the locker. That probably doesn't make any sense, if you'd like a picture I can take one.

My 210SS came with a small (about 12#) Danforth and rode which fits and mounts in that locker. There is even a clip that keeps the rope attached to the inner bolts of the bow scuff plate.

Walt - this is what West Marine's website says about the Danforth Anchor: Excellent holding in sand or sand/mud bottoms, but limited or no holding in grassy, rocky, or clay bottoms.
That's what concerns me. When we go to a lake with differing bottom conditions, it may not hold. What has been your experience?

I've never had a boat drift free using that anchor. With the chain giving it some weight, and proper anchoring technique, it will hold in nearly any environ. Once down at Stockton, I actually had to dive down the 30+ feet (clear water!) to free my anchor from the rocks on the bottom.

I like the sound of that. It's an anchor that will fit the desigined space on the bow and if it holds well in most or all conditions, that's what I'm after. It also appears that they are cost affective, so I won't have to much heartache if I ever have to cut it loose.

Keep in mind, that was my 24# anchor... just a bit too big for most storage spots. I'd say my FW anchor is about 12#, but still a danforth fluke style. I expect it will hold fine!

Now, this one came with the boat, already in the locker and all.... did your 210SS not? I could fit that one, and possibly a small (10#) mushroom anchor in the locker as well. Just a thought to cover the bases.

No they didn't include an anchor, but I'm very happy with everything that I got in my deal.

Nice! It's supposed to be in the mid 40's this weekend here.... maybe warm enough to get the ice outta the driveway!
