I'm about to get a new anchor for my boat. The bow anchor storage compartment is 20" wide. I was thinking of getting a Fortress or Guardian anchor after hearing many good things about them, but I don't think one will fit in my locker. I currently have a fluke anchor with a slip ring, and while overnighting over the weekend came unset twice, it might have been that I didn't have enough line out though. Any advice on what to get, or stick with what I have? |

Based on Mike's suggestion I purchased a Chene Anchor from Cabellas for $29.00 and used it on mud bottom and on rocks down at Grand Lake. The smaller version which they say is for boats up to 25 feet held the 4500 pound 224 really well. As a matter of fact we had to move the boat over the top of it just to get it to release each time. The only problem with it is it is smaller than the holder in my locker but the bolts holding the bow ring in place hold it fine. I'm extremely happy especially for 30 bones. |

Oh but to give you an idea of length of rope. I was in 35 feet of water and let out close to 85 feet of my 100 possible to get that kinda sticking power. |

How big is the anchor, dimension wise? My anchor locker is about 20" deep and 20" wide. My boat is 22.5' long...would that be a big enough anchor for it? |

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... &noImage=0 The deminsions are not listed from Cabellas but I can tell you the size I have is tiny. Probably 12-14 inches across and a little longer. Like I said the anchor hold on the 224 is meant for a fluke style anchor to be held across the opening and this one is actually to small to fit. It is easily the smallest anchor I've seen without going to one of those little mushrooms. As far as size, from what I can tell the sundowner is 24 feet long and weighs about 4100 pounds. The smallest of these anchors is advertised for boats up to 25 feet. My 224 is 24' long and weighs 4400 pounds and it worked great. If you have a doubt spend the $5 extra and get the next larger size, I think you will still have more than enough room in your locker. Also it says you don't need a chain due to it's design so I tried this and it held great. Don't get me wrong it doesn't hit the bottom and just stick but it worked really fast and I've never had an anchor catch immediately. |

Use the stock fluke anchor supplied with your boat and increase the length of chain you use. I use approximately 15' of 3/8" chain in lieu of the 6' of 5/16" chain Four Winns supplied. It's the weight of the chain that anchors the boat more than the anchor itself. Since I made the switch I have not expierienced a problem holding the boat. My anchor locker was plenty big to accomodate the extra chain. |

Sounds good. I'm switching from 100' of 1/2" anchor rode...don't ask me why I got the 1/2" size, to 150' of 3/8" rode and 15' of chain vs. the 6' I have on there now. Think that will step it up enough for me for anchoring overnight? I'm willing to try that before I drop $100 more on a new anchor. |

Guys I have yet to tackle this with my 210 (too busy watching the water rise  ). Since I have limited experiance with anchors of this type and for a 20' + boat. Am I to understand that the 3/8" chain will be adequate as will 3/8" rode?Wish I knew how to braid this stuff. |

I'd go with 5/16" chain, thats what the auction on eBay has with 150ft of 3/8" rode. About $50 shipped. Not bad in my book. If you want 1/2" rode thats 100' long, I've got some that was used once and thats it. |

I also have a box anchor. They hold good, but store even beter. Since I increased my chain I only use the box anchor if I need to hold the stern to keep her from sliding. With the Fluke, Box, and a Shore Spike, as well as 2-100' rodes I believe I'm anchored. My wife was injured last season and I was forced to leave the boat and accompany her to the hospital. When I got a ride back to the boat the following day it was right where I left it anchored. (With the winds howling she did'nt sleep well that night either). |

Digging up and old thread here....I currently have ~8lb slip ring fluke anchor and a 13lb fluke anchor for my boat. Obviously the 13 lb doesn't fit in the anchor locker, so I store it in the ski locker. The 8lb also doesn't fit well in the anchor locker, so I'm looking into another anchor that will fit. I'm debating between a standard 8lb fluke anchor or the chene anchor. I will use the slip ring fluke for my stern anchor. I think this will be more manageble when anchoring at the sand bars. Most of the bottoms around here are sand or mud. Will the chene hold well? If so, what size should I get and do I need chain with it? It can get pretty windy so I want to ensure the anchor holds so I don't have to worry about drifting into other boats, but also want it to fit in the front anchor locker. I will keep my 13lb fluke for when I need extra holding power. Also note that I typically don't have out a lot of rode at sand bars. All too many times I have nearly had another boater run too close to my bow and almost catch my line, even with floats to mark it. |

It works great for me and I use it in mud bottoms mostly, but also in rocks/logs. They make 3 sizes, the small or medium (at most) is what I'd recommend. |

Is this for the new boat? If so and you have a windlass you need to get the specifications of the windlass and make sure you rode will be appropriate for it. |
