So I picked up some Boat Buckles this past weekend and installed them after running to three different hardware stores looking for stainless bolts long enough to go through the trailer. I used clear rtv silicone around the bolts and washers to help seal the holes off from getting water in them. Is this enough to keep the water out of the trailer? Anyone else do anything different? Almost thought of just drilling another small hole in the bottom for a drain, but then thought this would allow water in everytime I put it in the water. Any thoughts? |

Take a good look at your trailer and you will find that there are holes in several locations that constantly allow water to enter the frame. I have some rough torch cut holes where the wiring is run for my mid trailer lights. I find that silicone just traps moisture and causes more damage than good... A few 1/4" holes in the bottom of your frame would probably not hurt. An application of a rust inhibitor like Krown or Rust Check might also be a good idea if you really think internal corrosion is going to be problem. I would just keep up with the rust on the outside and you will get many years before the trailer will rust through. |

Not to hijack this thread BUT, Why did FW cut holes in their trailers? Some nice stainless clips to hold the wiring & brake lines on the inside beams of the trailer would have been better in my mind. They are run there now for the most part. After dunking my trailer, I do my best to flush it out. The odd time large flakes of rusty metal wash out. A sealed system would at least stop the trailer from rusting from the inside out! |

I agree. I find it upsetting that I alrady have some surface rust on my trailer and it is only two years old. My old FW was 18 years old and had less rust on it than my new trailer. |

Just a thought, Depending on the size of the frame tubes and combined with the air in your tires, your trailer may end up being somewhat buoyant without the weight of your boat on it as air is trapped. Could make your time at the ramp retrieving your boat.... exciting!

Planet is right on with this one. With the tires already trying to float it, and alluminum wheels being fairly light, that thing would float up and drift to the side in a hurry. |

Not only that, but it would end up with water in it no matter how hard they tried to keep it out. It would just get trapped in there and cause the steel to corrode even faster. |

I have seen this first hand with a tri-axle aluminum beam trailer. Lucky the conditions weren't too bad but we did have to tie a line to the trailer and have somebody on the dock to keep it lined up! |
