I'm curious to know if anyone has used portable AC units for inside the cabin. I don't want to spend $1500+ for a "marine" AC.

If so, what has your experience been?

I'm talking about something like this: http://www.compactappliance.com/EdgeStar-8000-BTU-Ultra-Compact-Portable-Air-Conditioner-AP8000W/AP8000W,default,pd.html

I have use a window mount a/c unit on a small house boat. Worked ok.

I have considered the same unit before but problems are, its very heavy, take up bit of room, must run exhaust hose, power cord to trip on. On the plus side, big BTU's, would cool cabin nicely.
I think it would work, but after using for a season, you are going to wish you had a compact true marine unit installed that all you have to do is turn on and is never in the way, and wish you saved that $300 to go towards.

Good luck

I agree with powellcrazy that you will regret not spending the other 4 to 500 dollars for a
marine a/c. I generally don't need one up here in mass, if its hot out I sleep in my house.

I found a portable a/c for 8-900 dolllars that I think would be much more user friendly on a
boathttp://www.myboatsgear.com/mbg/product.asp?prodID=1352 If you really
do your homework I am sure you can lower this price. Good luck N
