Hi,

I have a 2006 V278 that stays in the water year round. Having bought the boat last year the only asthetic replacement required was the steering wheel which was coming to pieces.
Having replaced the part at $300++, the replacement FW wheel has fallen to tatters already. We have put on about 80hr over the year. As I live in Singapore, on the tropics, the boat does spend a lot of time in the sun but I would have hoped an original replacement would have lasted longer. The "metallic" coat of the O-ring came off after about 3 months and now the rubber grips have totally fallen to pieces.

Has anyone else had this problem? Everything boat related costs a fortune out here so I'm loathed to spend the money again, and again....

Oliver

Olivergm, I think I would be inclined to use an aftermarket wheel of some description. The wheel attachment would not be specific to FW and lots of different types are available.

There was a reply earlier to this thread....Capn must have deleted it.

I have had the woodgrain steering wheel on both my previous and current boat and have not had a problem.

Granted I am not in a tropical climate, but replacing it with a woodgrain and not the stock silver wheel that is failing you may be worth a shot.

Do you put any sort of cover on it when the boat is not in use? Perhaps even just a towel or something like that would protect it from the elements?

I put a Schmitt destroyer style wheel with a spinner knob on my old Horizon, they are pretty much indestructible....
