So i'm going to order my cover and have narrowed it down to two. Westland has a custom fit cover without vents and poles and then they have a semi custom cover with vents and poles. They are both sharkskin plus and both within 50 dollars of each other. My biggest worry is mildew during winter storage as my last boat was covered with mildew after I uncovered it last year. The custom fit will fit better but will it breathe well enough without vents to prevent mildew? Anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks

I stored in a barn over the winter with just my bow and cockpit covers. I used about 4 bags spread throughout the boat to absorb any moisture.

I stored my last boat in a barn with bow and cockpit covers and found lots of mold and mildew when I uncovered it the next season. I did not use any kind of damp bags or anything of that sort though. Through your experience do you think I would be safe with the fitted cover without vents as long as I used some sort of damp bags or something like that?

I would not use a cover that doesn't have vents. The moisture will have no where to evaporate. Even though my damp bags were quite full when I picked the boat up at the beginning of the season, I still would want good air circulation.

Any thoughts on color? My current cover is blue and it seems to turn my boat into an oven during the summer....
I'm thinking silver or natural plus some vents to keep things cooler, but it seems like lighter colors will look dirty over time....

dedided on the semi custom with the vents. better to be safe than sorry. I don't think the cover comes with vented poles though. Anyone know of the cheapest place I can get two vented poles for the cover?

Don't know about cheapest, but here's one at Overton's:

Ther's also a taller pole if need be:

If you're boat is stored around electricity.... you can do what I do. Make sure the boat is completely dry inside before covering.... and put one of those cheap $15 box fans (set on max speed) in the boat before you put the cover on and let the plug/cord hang out. Plug the fan in and run it 20-30min every couple weeks. I have practually no mold or mildew doing this. By circulating the air inside occasionally, you prevent stale stagnent air that causes mold and mildew.
