I'm also curious about this. I am looking into doing something similar in my dad's 1988 180 to modernize it a bit, but I'd want them to turn on with the other lights. I have found some info in other posts on these boards but I'm a little slow when it comes to electrical stuff. If you have any other photos of the wiring setup that would be awesome.

That is exactly what I did...simply ran a mother wire around the entire boat and to one of the switches on the dash. Than just tapped into it where I wanted an LED.

I'm impressed with the ingenuity and set-up of your project and have been looking for plastic rods to do this, but I was also wondering what size LED's did you use? Thanks for sharing a great idea.
