Like I said, loose flywheel bolts are common and will sound like the engine's going south. The 351W is a tough engine. If it's been serviced like you say, I highly doubt it's an engine issue.

The oil analysis will have specific instructions how to do it.

THANKS!

did he find one that did not knock when it was disconnected?

No

If not, then it could be the flywheel bolts. Problem is that I don't think there is anyway to get to them without pulling the engine out. Oil analysis will tell you if there are wear particles, and what they are likely from (if you have a bad bearing this will very likely show up). Contact Blackstone Labs or similar and ask them how to take a sample. In your case that might give more information than a compression test. If the oil sample does not show higher than average cylinder wear and bearing wear, again it points to something else, flywheel bolts, etc. I am not a Ford engine expert so I can't say really for sure.

This is sounding more like it. I am praying this is more of a minor issue, even if we have to pull the motor to get to the flywheel, I imagine that will be a hell of a lot cheaper than R & R'ing an engine.

Here is what I am going to do, I am going to research this blackstone labs....i have a few performance motor sport places down the street from me....might give them a call as well to see if they have a lab.

Just did research - so this oil analysis will tell me a TON of information. Thanks a million! Already ordered the kit...unfortunately my boat is already winterized, could I just run antifreeze through it on a loop for 20 minutes while the oil warms up? Anyone have suggestions? Or should I just run it with regular water and then re-winterize. Ive never winterized a boat but it certainly doesnt look very hard. Drain, put caps back on motor, run motor full of antifreeze....correct?

Booooooooo. Find it!

I feel like I've seen your boat out there somewhere. I recognize the name.

I live in the "Northland" 169 and 435 area. I had my boat on Smithville Lake most of the summer but my home port is 49mm Lake of the Ozarks. Our friends have a nice size lake house down there we have free use of anytime. There's a good chance you saw me on Smithville this summer or you caught me the one time I pulled my boat to Shawnee for some tire repairs on the trailer. I work in Shawnee and we have a tire shop not far from my office. Small world! Ha ha

Excellent.

My office is in Lenexa, 87th Street Pkwy & Rosehill.

We often cove out up by the 49MM. AARP cove, I believe is what they call it. Our kids are real young so it's been awhile. But I know for a fact I have seen your boat either on the Ozarks or up in Smithville.

Small world, Scott. My 1st IT job out of college was at 8901 Rosehill, which is now that animal research (or whatever it is) complex. It was Guaranteed Foods at the time.

That's hilarious - my office is right behind Gomers.

I've been kinda quiet on this guys to let yous get your geographical stuff out of the way.

As some have mentioned about a compression test, save your money. Below spec compression will result in poor idle. You have a knock. This means you have above spec clearance between 2 engine or drivetrain parts.

The oil test will pretty much tell you if you have engine problems internally. If not, I can guide you how to check for a loose flywheel without removing the engine. A bad u-joint could even travel up the drivetrain and make it sound like an engine knock for that matter.

Quick update: got the oil analysis kit in the mail yesterday.

Waiting for a good day to pull her out of storage and run her for 20 min to pull a sample then re-winterize.

Did you get your oil analysis back? If you need have to remove the flywheel, at least it will already be out if you have to replace the engine.

Could it be an exhause flapper? I've heard of people misdiagnosing an engine knock as an exhaust flapper making noise.
