I have a 2004 190 Horizon. I hear a grinding noise when going out of neutral. It happens more prevalent when the engine is not warmed up. Is this typical? I have a Mercruiser 5.0.

Dog clutch shifted outdrives will grind when shifting into gear if:
You shift too slowly, they need to be shifted briskly
The shift cable is getting sticky and not engaging all the way
The shift cable is out of adjustment so you are not getting full engagement in the gear that grinds
Sometimes this will happen if the idle speed is way to high

You want this fixed, grinding will wear out the sliding dog clutch and the fwd and rev gears and then it won't stay in gear. If those parts wear out you'd be looking at a lower unit rebuild $$$
