Well heard grinding noises that got progressively worse, especially in gear. so I took her out of the water. Gimble bearing was actually RUSTED. New Gimble and shaft bearings and seals, new bellows, new gear oil and impeller. Also replaced the shift cable. She purrs like a kitten now!

This is why I remove it at the end of each season, still it can happen but you're looking for cracks in the rubber of the driveshaft bellows....

Wow, just wondering what could be the cause. 12 years old is not that old. Did this boat ever go a long time without being used (like a year or more)?

Bellows should be replaced every 2-4 years. Most people let them go for MUCH longer, they get small cracks, leak water, and rust the bearing.

It was in storage for 2 years before I bought it because the previous owner had back problems. It only had 140 hours on it when I got it. Other than routine maintenance (oil, tune up, impeller, winterization, etc) I have never had to do anything to the boat. Until now the only money I have really spent is the factory extended swim platform, trim tabs, stereo upgrade, and replacing plastic latches with stainless. I only paid 15K for the boat 6 years ago so I still have less than $20K in it!! Been very happy with it and have no plans to replace it :)

Bellow replacement is not dependant on engine hours. They must be replaced every 2-4 years, doesn't matter if it sat in storage or used weekly. What damages them the most is sitting in storage with the drive in the up position. Soon as you lower it after being stretched for 2 years it will instantly crack and leak water into your bearing and u-joint.
