You want to add a second one? The 2014+ H180 have a fixed automatic extinguisher system in the engine compartment and are not required to have a hand held one.

They do? My '14 doesn't.

It's "supposed" to be a standard feature on the i/o models

According to whom?

Where? I looked before I asked because it would really surprise me if they included an automatic system on the entry level boat. I don't think I've seen one from the factory on any entry level sub 20' boat.

Sorry, I should have mentioned this will be an outboard that I'm buying. Don't have it yet, which is why I posted pictures I found online.

Oh, outboard. It has a hand held one, it must by law to be sold. It's usually in a storage bin somewhere not in the open, because who want's to see the fire extinguisher?!

What law says that a boat must have a fire extinguisher to be sold?

There are circumstances where O/B powered boats less than 26ft are not required to have any type of fire extinguisher.

Four Winns 2015 catalog does not even show fire extinguishing system to even be an option until the H230 and it is only an option for the sport boats. For the 2014 and 2015 cruisers it is an option for the V275 and standard on all others. The 2014 sport boat catalog would not open.

Fire extinguishers are one subject that apparently ric doesn't know anything about.

To the OP. On my 2004 180 OB, the extinguisher is mounted on the bulkhead under the "glove" box. It is mounted horizontally on a typical plastic clamp/holder. It has never been in the way but is also within easy reach when/if needed.

I don't have to throw grandma off the seat to get to it and I will at least have an opportunity to keep my family safe if the unfortunate should happen. I'll still need an insurance policy to replace the boat, b/c once a boat starts to burn it is seldom salvageable. But I at least demand the opportunity to extinguish the fire before it causes harm to anyone.

Thanks for the suggestions. They're very helpful!

FYI, New York State says:

"All mechanically propelled vessels, except outboards less than 26 feet in length and of open construction, must carry one B-I US Coast Guard approved fire extinguisher. Mechanically propelled vessels 26 feet to less than 40 feet in length must carry two B-I US Coast Guard approved fire extinguishers. Mechanically propelled vessels 40 feet to less than 65 feet in length must carry three B-I US Coast Guard approved fire extinguishers. Vessels 65 feet and greater in length should consult federal regulations.

On any vessel, one B-II extinguisher may substitute for two B-I extinguishers. Vessels equipped with approved fixed extinguishing systems may carry one less B-I extinguisher. Beyond the previously mentioned requirements fire extinguishers are also required whenever: a vessel is equipped with an inboard engine, where there are enclosed or permanently mounted fuel tanks on board, when there are enclosed living spaces, or there are closed stowage compartments in which combustible or flammable materials are stored."

So, the way I read it, that line about fuel tanks (red letters above) means I need a fire extinguisher even though I'll have an outboard engine. But guess what? Even if my boat were exempt, I'd still want it so that the thing doesn't blow up and send dismembered pieces of us 50 feet into the clear blue skies of the Adirondacks. I'd rather not be fish food.

Anyway, thanks again. No need to turn this into a debate. I was just looking for some advice on where to put a fire extinguisher in my new boat.

It's US Federal Law for all vessels with a permanently installed fuel tank to have at least one B-1 rated fire extinguisher. If your boat didn't in fact come with one you officially got shafted.

Where in the law does it say it has to have a fire extinguisher to be sold? Being sold and operating are two completely differnet things.

If a boat under 26ft has a fixed system there is no requirement for a B-1 extinguisher.

Ours is mounted under the driver's dash, near where your left foot would be. Makes it easily accessible by both driver or passenger. I have yet to hit my left foot against it in the 4 years I've had the boat.

Can you mount it on the underside of the rear seat so it is visible and out of the way? The pics don't show underneath the backseat so I am just guessing. It may hinder storage but it will be out of the way. Only other spot other than next to the driver seat is tucking it up under the passenger dash but people may not be able to see it in a emergency.

I bought my used H190 from a boat dealer here in a northwest Chicago suburb. When we picked up the boat the salesman was going over everything on the boat and he pointed out the new fire extinguisher he was "throwing" in the deal. It was in a box under the seat. I questioned him about it because he was a pretty savvy salesman and I knew he wasn't "throwing" in anything. Somewhere I was paying for it. He smiled and said, "Well, it's required by Illinois law". He didn't say if it had anything to do with the length of the boat or the type of engine. Just that it was required by Illinois law. That was one if the few things he said, that I believed. :D

Here's an update: Now that we've had the boat for about a week, we've decided to keep the extinguisher in the rubber-lined glove box. That storage compartment is bigger and deeper than it looks in photos online, and it's funny that I never bothered to look at the size at the boat show earlier this year. It's still a quick grab in case we need it and now I don't have to drill into any fiberglass. Thanks for all the suggestions!
