I have been reading and learning a lot about Horizons/Four winns from this forum. I came across this one for sale near me. I emailed the listing and owner sent me this info on it...

"...the boat does not take on any water. It runs and shifts as it should, interior is clean, and hull is solid. However, it does have some small issues. When you drop from a high speed down to an idle it tends to stall. This doesn't happen when you idle down slowly. Other than that the it runs very solid and the engine has no problems. I've replaced the steering wheel assembly, steering cable, and the power steering actuator, but the steering is a little stiff at higher speed. The only thing left is the power steering pump which is fairly cheap. Ive put new horn, fuel cap, fuel gauge sending unit also on the boat."

I've read on the forum her about the stalling issue some, but seen different ideas. Maybe the accelerator pump, maybe fuel filter.

Wondering thoughts on how big of a "potential fix/problem?"

here's the listing: 5.0 cobra efi, 1994 220 Horizon

Great hull, but an injected engine of this vintage could have it's challenges.
It won't be the Accelerator Pump, as it doesn't have a carburettor.

Thank you deafwish. I'm thinking stay away from EFI all together? You think that?

Entirely your call, but repairing something of this vintage with a carb, will be peanuts! 8)

The other challenge will be this:
Many times specialized parts for marine engines are made for a limited # of years. So if you need an electronic ignition module or the ECM that runs the EFI one day you coukd be SOL because the parts are NLA!!
With old boats you are better off with less advanced systems like carbs and points n condenser ignition because these can be sourced in the aftermarket easily.

I'd check on the Crowley Marine website to see if these parts are available .
That's a Ford Marine engine; just like a Mustang GT. Good engine but even things like exhaust manifolds are hard to find.
I see in the pic the outdrive is an original OMC Cobra not the joint venture with Volvo model. So that tells me the engine package is actually a 1993, because that was the last year the original Cobras were sold.

As mentioned it is basically a 5.0 EFI from a Mustang, and the electronic ignition parts are just standard Motorcraft as I have replaced some of them on my boat. The ECM is NLA but there are ways to get around that subbing in another ECM from a Mustang. Stalling when coming down out of throttle sounds like it could be a bad idle air bypass motor as it cant supply enough air to keep it running when the throttle blade closes, rather cheap ~$50 part that can be purchased from any auto parts store. You can also use a standard automotive Ford EEC-IV OBDI scan tool using the diagnostic port on the starb side of the engine to see if it has any stored engine codes.
