1998 Four Winns 240 Price??

Hello all!

Been a while since I have posted anything on here. I still have my 1997 Four Winns Sundowner 205. I am looking to upgrade to a 1998 Four Winns 240 Horizon. The 240 has about 400 hrs on it, the U-Seating, 5.7 EFI W/ Duo Props. Has full Bimini top w bow/cockpit cover. Over boat is in great shape, upgraded stereo, and very well maintained. They are asking $17k, is that a fair price? The reason I'm so confused is I have my 97 205 Sundowner. It has been for sale for two weeks at 11k and not even a call. Any insight would be helpful! THANKS

Also does anyone know if the 1998 240 has a wood flood or fiberglass? The owner says fiberglass but isn't 100% sure.

Based upon your description, seems to be a nice boat. Good engine/outdrive, low hours, roomy boat, enclosed head compartment, etc.

I am sure rpengr will chime in because he is a very knowledgeable 240 owner...

As far as the values go, it seems that similar age bow riders in this size range hold their value better than cuddy cabin boats. A larger bow rider with enclosed head is a great day boat, you have more seating up front so people can spread out and the head, just in case.

I sold our 97 245 Sundowner with 5.7 GSI/SX for around $14k. Fiberglass floor was optional until around 2000 or so.

It took a while to sell our Sundowner, cuddy boats don't seem to sell as quick but if someone wants a cuddy the options are limited and we got what we wanted for price.

Yes it is in great shape, just not sure on the price. I don’t want buyer remorse after I realize I overpaid.

Yes I would have to agree, the market for Cuddys isn’t strong, but I’m just surprised as mine has ever option, EFI, DUO Props, Camper top, table, upgraded wheel on the trailer, everything. I’m more surprised that I haven’t even had one single phone call on it. I will just have to hold out for a few more weeks before I lower the price. I refuse to give it away though as I don’t really need to sell it, but then again I do not need two boats in the driveway.

Thank you, I have seen the catalogs, but I just wasn’t sure if there was a way to tell or not. The boat doesn’t have snap in carpet so it makes it a little harder to detect if it has fiberglass or not.

My "early 2000" Horizon 240 (same as 1996-1999) has the fiberglass floor and snap in carpet. My understanding is that the fiberglass floor was an option in those years, but hopefully most of them had that option. If the carpet is glued down, then it must be the wood floor.

The boat has a lot of utility. Is rated to carry up to 13 passengers (7-9 is more realistic for comfort). I feel that the handling of these boats is very good also. I have never felt there was any need for trim tabs.

I bought mine 3 years ago "in the low 'teens". It was in excellent condition with 340 hours of mostly fresh water use, plus some salt. Had full covers & bimini, all in good condition. Carpet was fair condition. Steel trailer was not in good condition. Mine is 5.7GS/SX so the EFI and Duo Prop would add value. Maybe the U-shaped seating would be an adder also...not sure.

You didn't mention what kind of trailer it has. I would think you could get that boat for $12k-$13k plus the value of the trailer. That being said...don't let a creampuff pass you buy if it is just what you are looking for. Buyer's remorse usually comes from poor condition, not from price.

Thanks Ray for the info. The trailer is the standard Four Winns dual axle trailer with surge brakes. It has four decent tires (will probably need to replace as I think they are original) and a spare. Standard steel wheels and trailer lights that don't work (new LED set comes with the boat)

This is very true, I think I'm going to make him a cash offer, lower than his listed price and hope he jumps on it. Thanks again for your help! I will let everyone know what happens. I'm looking at it Easter weekend.

One potential negotiation points could be what dash does it have? If it still has the vdo dash I'd use that to your advantage. Majority of them end up having issues & cost to replace isn't cheap.

That is a good point. I asked the owner about this and he said that he has already had this issue fixed and that the gauges are all in working order. The owner seemed to be very knowledgeable, wouldn't surprise me if he has actually been on here before as that is where I have gained most my knowledge of FW. Thanks
