You definitely should go by the dipstick - but that assumes your dip stick tube is installed correctly and that you have the correct dip stick. If you have reason to think either of those are untrue - like putting in the correct amount of oil and not seeing any on the dip stick - something's not right.

I agree about making sure the big container was 6 qts and not 5. All the big jugs of oil I buy are 5 qts.

Hmmm - good point , never dawned on me that we can have the wrong dipstick ??? I will question the dealer to check it out as she is going into the shop today ( that is another thread ) .....

It would be very unusual to have the wrong dip stick - but it would NOT be the first time.

I thought it was ODD , but we only put in 4.5 quarts after draining all the oil ...

Don't forget to include the oil in the filter. Depending on the size of filter it can be more than you'd expect. That and depending on how you extract the oil there's always some left in the engine.

But I'd agree with their advice, in the end go by the reading on the dipstick. That and GO BACK and check it. Warm the engine up and check it. Then check it again after a run.
